One of the most vital, complex, and equally fascinating organs in the body is our brain. It is one of the two key parts of our central nervous system which primarily directs our body's internal functions. It also integrates sensory impulses and information to form perceptions, thoughts, and memories.
In recent years, conditions affecting the brain, nerves, and spinal cord known as ‘’neurological conditions’’ have become a growing concern, affecting billions of people worldwide. In 2021 alone, about 3.4 billion people were diagnosed with neurological conditions.
Globally, neurological conditions are now considered a leading cause of ill health and disability, and the number of people living with, or dying from these neurological conditions such as stroke, meningitis, Alzheimer's disease, and other dementias, has risen substantially over the past decades due to the growth and aging of the global population as well as increased exposure to environmental, metabolic, and lifestyle risk factors.
Whilst not all neurological conditions can be prevented, adopting a healthy lifestyle can lower the risk of certain conditions; notably, 90% of strokes and 40% of dementia cases are preventable. Regular exercise, adopting a healthy diet, prioritizing adequate and regular sleep, managing stress, keeping socially connected, and limiting the consumption of stimulants can contribute to a healthier brain and overall nervous system.
Preventing head injury by wearing helmets when cycling or participating in contact sports, is also essential. We can collectively and individually make a significant impact by taking steps to promote our brain health and prevent brain diseases and cognitive decline. Neurological conditions can be quite challenging but early diagnosis and timely treatment can significantly improve the quality of life for those affected.
