Good morning,
Forgetting our content on stage is by far one of the biggest fears we have when it comes to public speaking. You know that moment when your brain just stops… mid-speech or mid-presentation. It feels terrifying, right?
Picture this: You’re absolutely crushing it, the crowd is loving you, and then… BAM! Your brain hits the snooze button. And in this moment you are CONVINCED the entire audience can see the panic flashing in your eyes.
But guess what? They can’t! In most cases your audience won’t even notice… unless, of course, you tell them!
Because here’s the truth: what feels like a cringe-worthy eternity to you on stage is probably just a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment for your audience. They’re not sitting there with stop-watches waiting to catch every second of hesitation. They’re probably just focusing on your content.
Now, am I saying you should aim for a memory wipe? Absolutely not. But if it happens (and trust me, it happens to everyone), it doesn’t mean it’s game over. In fact, it’s the perfect chance to flex your improv muscles and charm your way through it!
Here’s 4 tips to handle it like a total pro:
1. Pause so you don’t freak out
Seriously, just breathe. A pause will be your greatest weapon in this instance. Pauses add drama, suspense and tension… and they can make your next words land even deeper with your audience. So next time your brain decides to do a ‘Houdini’ on you, just smile, sip your water, and look like you planned it all along. The secret? You’re the only one who knows what you were going to say next!

2. Keep cool and lead the vibe
Here’s a truism: Your audience follows your vibe. If you stay calm and collected, they’ll think you’ve got it all under control. So channel your inner swan – stay graceful, smooth and serene up top, even if you’re paddling like mad underneath. No one needs to know what’s happening behind the scenes!
3. Always prepare a back-up line
Be ready with a few go-to phrases that can save you in the moment. Instead of the typical “Let’s take a moment to reflect on that,” try something more unexpected like, “While my brain goes on a quick vacation, let’s all just vibe for a second.” Or even, “Here’s a fun fact I completely forgot – let’s figure it out together!” These can lighten the moment and buy you time to get back in control.
4. Turn this moment into pure gold
My advice in every situation is: Make it fun! A little self-deprecating humour can turn a panicked moment into an absolute highlight! For example, when your brain feezes, just say, “Oh, this is the part where I dramatically pause for effect. How’s it working?” Or even, “And now, a brief intermission brought to you by my brain – unintentional, and evidently stuck in buffering mode.” Acknowledge it, own it, and turn it into a laugh. Audiences love it when you’re real and can roll with whatever happens. Plus, your honesty will be incredibly refreshing!
Remember, public speaking isn’t about being perfect – it’s about connecting. And sometimes, those off-script moments create the most authentic, memorable and joyful connections of all.
So, next time your mind blanks on stage, take a breath, flash your beautiful smile, and know this: No one’s going to notice… unless YOU point it out to them!
Sending you courage, confidence, and lots of glitter,
