The Brain On Empathy – Why most Leaders get it wrong

Many managers don’t appreciate how difficult it can be to get right—or the consequences when it goes awry.

As leaders, we often read and learn about different types of intelligence, and the most focused one is emotional intelligence. Much has been written on task orientation versus relationship orientation leadership styles and the need for empathetic leadership in the workplace.

?Those high on Empathy even have the term ?in the corporate world– “Empathocrats”

?What, then, is true Empathy? What forms does it exist in?

In an exciting article by Amelia Haynes, she postulates that Empathy is often misunderstood and understated because it’s a very complex emotion, and many Managers in real life do not have a genuine & honest appreciation.

She talks about three constructs of Empathy.

?

  • Cognitive Empathy - Understanding the emotional experience of others while maintaining a healthy detachment.

?

  • Sympathy, or emotional Empathy, lets us feel what another person is experiencing. This has value—but also limitations.

?

  • Compassion, or empathetic care, manifests as concern for others.

In today’s dog-eat-dog world, Empathy is often underrated and understated. CXO leaders usually underestimate the insidious impact of a lack of Empathy in their leadership styles, company culture, and employee morale.
