Brain and Building: Find Miracles Through Digital Twins

Thank you, Cal Poly CAED, for the opportunity to share my unique experience and complex journey with the greater community.

As articulated in the article, there are incredible outcomes of using advanced #digitaltwins to crosspollinate between many sectors. In my case, both building digital twins and human digital twins.

I suffer from seizures and epilepsy.?Medications alone are not enough to control them.

The AECO and medical communities are siloed.?AECO is focused on leveraging proactive physics-based digital twins to optimize building performance and sustainability.?Similarly, the neuroscience community focuses on optimizing human performance also leveraging a version of digital twins.?In both scenarios, the building and human assets and their virtual digital counterparts leverage unlimited datapoints – both real and simulated – combined with Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enable asset performance for continuous optimization.

In my case, the UCLA Neurology teams were able to do the same for me to optimize “Todd” to eliminate my seizures.?For us as building professionals, metaphorically we are leveraging physics-based digital twins to prevent “seizures” of the building (e.g. operational issues causing downtime, wasted energy, BMS control issues, IoT sensor problems, etc.)

The message that I learned throughout my painful journey is that both industries are seeking ways to optimize their assets – the building and the human.?I never dreamed that when I chose to take my architectural background into digital architecture to develop performance digital twins did I think I would actually end up needing a digital twin of myself!

We are now looking at the interaction of building and human digital twins intefacing bidirectionally, but that is for a follow-on discussion.

Thanks for sharing your story, Todd! This is a fascinating and inspirational case study for digital twins.

Your story is both inspirational and instructional, Todd. I truly admire your courage and grit in helping not simply yourself through your own challenging circumstances, but no doubt countless others whose lives will benefit from you taking the leap of faith and allowing research, data collection and assessment of a new trial and error approach to medical science - literally with your life at stake. Not many people would be brave enough to risk everything as you have, and so many people will benefit as a result of your readiness to challenge what's possible. To your continued health - I look forward to hearing more of your exploits!
