Brad Stulberg on the Paradox of Achievement and Sustainable Success

Achievement often comes at a cost. Angst, restlessness, frayed relationships, exhaustion, and even substance abuse can be the unwanted-side effects of an obsession with outward performance. While the “high” of occasional wins can keep you going for a bit, there is also a concomitant risk of playing into the always-on-never-enough-hustle-culture that ultimately takes a serious toll.

This is the arena that Brad Stulberg works in.

Brad is an internationally known expert on human performance, well-being, and sustainable success. He holds a master’s degree in public health from the University of Michigan. He is coauthor of the bestselling?Peak Performance?and? The Passion Paradox, and his work has appeared in the?New York Times,?Wall Street Journal,?Los Angeles Times, Wired, Forbes,?Outside Magazine?and more.

With Steve Magness, Brad cofounded The Growth Equation, a multimedia platform dedicated to the art and science of success. In his performance-coaching practice, he works with executives, entrepreneurs, and physicians, and he regularly speaks to large organizations on these topics as well.?In this episode we focused on Brad’s most recent book, The Practice of Groundedness: A Transformative Path to Success That Feeds—Not Crushes—Your Soul

I have had a number of journalists and authors on the show, and I always like to start off with learning about their origin story, Brad’s was fascinating, and a bit out of the norm.

In The Practice of Groundedness, Brad offers a healthier and more sustainable model for success. At the heart of this model is groundedness: it values presence over rote productivity, accepts that progress is nonlinear, and prioritizes long-term values and fulfillment over short-term gain. To be grounded is to possess a firm and unwavering foundation, a resolute sense of self from which deep and enduring, not shallow and superficial, success can be found. Groundedness does not eliminate ambition and striving; rather, it situates these qualities and channels them in more meaningful ways.

Interweaving case studies, modern science, and time-honored lessons from ancient wisdom traditions such as Buddhism, Stoicism, and Taoism, Brad teaches readers how to cultivate the habits and practices of a more grounded life.

The six principles of groundedness:

1) Accept where you are to get where you want to go

2) Be present so you can own your attention and energy

3) Be patient and you’ll get there faster

4) Embrace vulnerability to develop genuine strength and confidence

5) Build deep community over efficiency and optimization

6) Move your body to ground your mind

Some of the early praise for Groundedness comes from an impressive collection of best-selling authors:

Brad Stulberg has become the writer I turn to for examinations of success, in all of that word's personal and professional complexities and connotations. The Practice of Groundedness is a perfect extension of what Brad has been building for years. It follows from his essays and previous books—but is more ambitious, far-reaching, and impactful.” - David Epstein,?New York Times?bestselling author of?Range

Brad Stulberg is one of my favorite writers about performance and success in all its forms. The Practice of Groundedness gets to the heart of the matter.” - Ryan Holiday,?New York Times?bestselling author of?Stillness Is the Key

“The Practice of Groundedness offers a crucial alternative to the large audience of those exhausted by soulless exhortations to crush it and looking for a deeper approach to building a successful life.” - Cal Newport, New York Times bestselling author of Digital Minimalism and Deep Work

“A thoughtful, actionable book for pursuing more excellence with less angst.” - Adam Grant, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Think Again and host of the TED podcast WorkLife

This book taps into something that so many of us feel but can’t articulate.” - Arianna Huffington, Founder & CEO, Thrive Global

And recently, Brad had what he aptly called a “pinch-me moment” when the greatest marathoner of all-time, Eliud Kipchoge, who is also known as a deep, deep thinker, was asked if he was reading anything for motivation prior to smashing the world-record at the Berlin Marathon, and he said: "I was reading? The [Practice] of Groundedness...it molds you as a human being." (Here is the story, first reported by a Kenyan outlet.)

Brad noted elsewhere that “We've long admired Eliud Kipchoge, and not only for his greatness in running but also for his thoughtfulness and discernment as a person. He improves fast ‘slowly by slowly.’ There’s a reason his nickname is ‘The Philosopher King.’ He is truly the perfect ambassador for?The Practice of Groundedness.”

Brad shared with us what spurred him to write it and the backstory as to why Good Enough was almost the title. Groundedness pushes back against the culture’s misguided obsession with speed and “hacks.” It’s the perspective from emergency department physicians who say “go slow to go fast” or the Navy Seals’ perspective the slow is smooth and smooth is fast.

PART 2 of the book is on “Living a Grounded Life,” and weaving the principles together. Brad walked us through what that can look like, and it reminded me of Ryan Holiday’s writing on “stillness.”
