Eat the Frog - Tackle Your Hardest Task First

Think about your task list right now. What's one task you keep avoiding?

Maybe it’s one you’ve pushed back a dozen times, or something that’s not urgent yet you dread thinking about it. We all put off those “frogs”- the hard, time-consuming tasks we dread but know are essential.

That’s where the concept of “eating the frog” comes from. It’s inspired by a quote from Mark Twain.

“If it’s your job to eat a frog, it’s best to do it first thing in the morning. And if it’s your job to eat two frogs, it’s best to eat the biggest one first.”

Eat the Frog is a productivity technique used to stop procrastinating and get more done while reducing stress.

So, how do we "eat the frog" in recruitment?

Pick Your Frog

Your “frog” is the task that would make the biggest difference in your day or week but that you’re tempted to avoid. For recruiters, this could be following up with a passive candidate, digging into candidate background research, etc.

Eat It First

Doing the hardest thing first can be energizing. When you get that big task out of the way, you’ll feel more productive and motivated for the rest of the day.

Reward Yourself

After “eating the frog,” reward yourself. Acknowledge the sense of accomplishment, whether it’s a quick coffee break, a walk, or simply moving on to a more enjoyable task.

Get the toughest thing off your plate early, create momentum, and free up mental space for other matters.

I appreciate your presence

Bring the joy back to work - Self-care tips for recruiters

53% of recruiters say their roles are stressful?

(2023 Employ Recruiter Nation Report)

Let’s face it: recruiting is a high-pressure job, and constant stress can quickly lead to burnout. Burnout can lead a job you once loved into a daily grind.?

So, what’s the answer? Self-care.

Here are some unexpected but super helpful self-care tips you can start following today to keep stress in check and bring joy back to your work.

1. Set “Power-Down” Reminders

It’s easy to get caught up in tasks after work hours, but consistent late nights can wear you down. Set a daily “power-down” reminder 30 minutes before you’d ideally like to close the laptop. Use this time to wrap up, make a quick to-do list for tomorrow, and ease out of work mode.

2. Give Micro-Meditation a Try

Short on time? Try micro-meditation. Just one minute of deep breathing between tasks can help reset your mind and lower stress. It’s perfect for those days with back-to-back interviews.

3. Personalize Your Workspace

Set up a workspace that makes you feel good. That could be a picture of your loved ones, a small plant, stress-relieving scent jars, or something that makes you smile when you look at it. A pleasant workspace can help reduce stress and make you feel more in control.

4. Break the Routine with “Task Stretching”

Every few hours, stretch for two minutes between tasks. This can be as simple as rolling your shoulders, doing a quick side twist, or a brisk walk around your space. Moving more during the day can be great for energy and mood.

5. Set “No-Work” Zones

Set “no-work” zones to draw a clear line between work and personal time. It could be keeping work tasks out of your personal calendar or reserving part of your evening exclusively for non-work activities.

“Just when you feel you have no time to relax, know that this is the moment you most need to make time to relax.” ― Matt Haig
