?Boycott ? à la fran?aise ??

?? The 2022 World Cup in Qatar has just begun and many public figures stated they will boycott it. The French also seem determined to boycott the World Cup.?And not only because of the working conditions of the workers but also due to the environmental impact when they are being asked to make an effort on their energy consumption and to limit their carbon footprint.

??? At the time of our survey, one month before the start of the World Cup, more than half of French people said they would not watch the World Cup (55.3%). However more than 1 in 5 French people (21.7%) said they might watch one or more World Cup matches.

♂?♀? Significantly more men than women declare they will watch one or more World Cup matches (35.9% vs 11.4% women). And over 2/3 of French women will not watch the World Cup. Men's interest in football largely explains this difference.

?? While the youngest (25-34) are more committed to environmental causes, 32.7% of them declare they will watch the World Cup (32.7%). Whereas 65+ French people will not watch one or more World Cup matches.

?? Looking at CSPs, self-employed and senior executives are the most likely to watch the matches (34.9%). They also represent the group that records the fewest undecided with only 15.4% saying they might watch one or more matches.

??? Even more surprisingly only 14% of those living in towns of <2,000 inhabitants will watch a match compared to almost 64% who will not watch a single match. In contrast residents of cities of 100,000 or more will watch the most matches (26.8% vs 52.2% of them not watching a match).

?? More than a quarter of French people plan to boycott the World Cup (27.6%). These are mostly men (43.2% vs 31.2% women). ?Similarly 1 in 2 self-employed/executives plan to boycott compared to less than 1 in 4 workers.

Let’s take a look at the reasons for these choices.

?? The first reason for not watching the World Cup is basically a lack of interest in football for 57.6% of respondents (two thirds are women). There is also a correlation between age and interest in football, the older the respondent, the more likely they are not to watch the World Cup for this reason.

???? The second reason given by 31.2% of respondents is the boycott of the event because it is taking place in Qatar (36.3% men vs 27.9% women). Managers/self-employed people are also significantly more numerous (47.5%,) while only 19.3% of workers choose this reason.

???? One month before the event 16% of the French are undecided regardless of gender, age or occupation.

?? Finally 8.7% of respondents say they will "naturally" boycott the World Cup regardless of the location.?Among them 15.9% of 18-24-vs 5.8% of 65+).
