The Bovid Conundrum

The?Bovidae?biological family?comprises?cloven-hoofed (split hoof), ruminant?(cud chewing) mammals?that include cattle, bison, buffalo, antelopes and caprine (goat and sheep). A member of this family is called a?bovid.?

Bovids are the most?diverse, widespread, and abundant family of hoofed mammals with 143 different species including one discovered in the 1990s. ?They include three of the five?domesticated?mammals namely cattle, sheep, and goats.??It’s rather unfortunate that the domestication of these three is putting pressure on the resources for the remaining species.?But’s that a discussion for another day. Back to Bovid’s there is a fascinating story of how buffaloes respond to thunderstorms versus a herd of cows.

"The very essence of instinct is that it's followed independently of reason" - Charles Darwin

Like many other animals, Cows can also sense the storm.?They hear the thunder; sense danger and instinctively being to move away from danger. ?They cannot outrun the storm. So just by running away from it, they end up staying longer in wind and rain, exacerbating the impact.

Contrary to cows, with the same ability to sense danger, buffalos herd up and run towards the thunderstorm. ?Doing so, they face the same wind and rain, but the duration of their affliction is much smaller.

We too can choose what to do when faced with our own thunderstorms. ??Got you thinking, eh?

“Choices are the hinges of destiny.”– Pythagoras

Are you one of those who don't fall for the false bravado of courage and believe running away from a storm is preferable to running into it? ?Did you even consider the option of standing still and letting the storm pass? It is a choice that cows and buffaloes may not have but humans do.

"Who wishes to fight must first count the cost" Sun Tzu, The Art of War

In the end it's not about whether you prefer to be a buffalo, a cow or possibly even a human while facing your own thunderstorms.?It’s how you arrive at that choice is what will define you. ?There’s always a limitation on the resources and energy that each one of us has or even can access. Learning how to conserve these resources to fight the right battles is what will help you reach your dreams.

"May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears.”– Nelson Mandela

For humans, the storms are financial, environmental, social, to name a few. Do you think you’re prepared for the next Great Depression lurking round the corner? How do you respond to it? Ignore it or run from it? How will you weather the storm?

Hmmm… What an intriguing thought…. Perhaps instead of looking at only the risk elements, is there a lens to look at the hidden opportunities as well…
