The boundaries of Human IoT

The boundaries of Human IoT

Gartner researchers says "A key trend coming out of this year's list is the need for location independence. Right now, many people work remotely in a digital-first mode. IT leaders must provide location-independent services. IoT edge cloud -- which includes Internet of Things consumer and industrial capabilities -- is one example of how to get there.

For those who are not working remotely, workplaces of the future will evolve in response to the pandemic regardless of whether they’re offices for knowledge workers or automobile manufacturing plants.?The changes will include the adoption of remote support technologies using mobile devices. Contactless and passwordless interactions using Internet of Things sensors, smart cards enabled by NFC and wearables will become the norm for mundane transactions such as unlocking physical access to restricted spaces, and operating elevators or vending machines".

The Internet of Things is a prime example of an interdisciplinary domain, where the proper mix of experience, process and mindset is much more than a sum of individual parts. Billions of machines, devices, components, sensors and actuators are already connected to the Internet today. The data and insights that can be derived from such connections offer tremendous opportunities for the most varied business models.

However, there is also a danger of becoming swallowed up by the limitless abundance of data generated by the IoT and Industry 4.0. In these early days of the Internet of Things (IoT), much of the focus has been on industrial applications, such as improving operations with autonomous machines, or standalone consumer products, like a Fitbit.?But from researcher reports, we’re seeing a more human-centric category of IoT activity starting to emerge. It’s less about automation and more about personal augmentation;?less about individual devices and more about “living services” that let people program and connect smart devices however they want.

For instance, using one of these living services, I might connect my car to my smart garage door opener, which I’ve connected to my smart lock, which activates my smart thermostat that I’ve synced to my smart lighting system. I can program them all to simultaneously interact and do their jobs when I turn onto my driveway. My experience of coming home is enhanced, since everything is acting according to my preferences. The data show that the most heavily used IoT programs are ones that make home life easier, more distinctive, and more pleasant.?

Technology that extends security can monitor your homes from anywhere—you can see who is entering the house when you’re away, or you check in on a sick child or elderly parent.? Nothing can give this peace-of-mind for you to feel safe at home or at work or during travel. The Internet of Things scales up?creative ways to enhance daily experiences. The IoT platforms that connect smart devices and sensors to augment everyday moments by tapping into sensory aspects of our environment like visuals, temperatures, and sounds. One of the most popular single programs we identified connects the Weather Channel and the Phillips Hue Lighting system in which internet-enabled lights turn blue in specified rooms if it starts to rain.?

The human-centered applications that are so popular in our sample of early IoT adopters generally relate to home activities. But the larger trend—of personalized services that take up residence alongside us, so to speak, and learn from our behaviors—is context-agnostic. People at work, no less than people at home, are going to want this. However, risks emanating from the manufacturing process include weak passwords, unsecured hardware, absence of a patching mechanism, and insecure data storage are part of the package. Recently I came across an offering came to me with other product :

IoT is good but there are certain things in life that should be by human touch. Some of these items are going to remove the parents and babies communication. There are kids already speaks same language as the baby-sitters that parents don't understand. There may be market share to take but it will destroy those growing minds. Something to consider for technology innovators.
