As a fresh graduate entering the corporate world, it was already easy to feel overwhelmed by the fast-paced, high-stakes environment without having layoffs added to the mix. Tech giants like Google, Twitter, Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta among many other smaller tech companies have laid off 1000's of employees.
LinkedIn for one is filled with posts by all such effected people. In some cases the separations have been as impersonal as an email from the CEO and mid call disconnections for recruiters.
Layoffs are a tough reality in the corporate world today, and they can be especially difficult for employees who suddenly find themselves out of work.
While I would suggest fresh graduates not to get overwhelmed by this. Better times will come. They always do. However I thought to share some ways to deal with this difficult time. In some cases these apply to everyone trying to gain a fresh perspective.
It is important to remember that whenever a door closes, another one ( or more) open. I shall explore how layoffs can be an opportunity for personal and professional growth, and how individuals can cope with the changes that come with a layoff.
First and foremost: It's important to give yourself time to grieve the loss of your job. This can be a traumatic experience, and it's normal to feel a range of emotions, including anger, sadness, and anxiety.
Allow yourself to feel these emotions and process them in a healthy way, whether it's through talking to friends and family, seeking support from a therapist, or simply taking some time for yourself.
You may also seek out support from friends, family, and HR professionals. They can offer practical advice, help you navigate the job search process, and provide emotional support during this difficult time. Joining a support group or participating in a workshop can also be a great way to connect with others who are going through similar experiences.

Once you've taken the time to process your emotions, it's time to start thinking about the future.
Think about the future: A layoff can provide an opportunity for you to reassess your career goals and interests, and to explore new opportunities that may not have been available to you before. Take advantage of this time to do some introspection, and to figure out what you truly want from your career. Also keep a tab on your budgets.
Remain POSITIVE: It's important to maintain a positive outlook and embrace the changes that come with a layoff. You have the power to shape your future and create the life you want. Focus on your strengths, and take the opportunity to learn new skills or pursue new interests. I have seen some members in my network initiate startups of their own, some have started studying new and exciting courses - maybe a career change altogether.
Focus on health: While focusing on your mental health please do not forget about your physical well being. A great and satisfying exercise is taking a morning walk / jog. The fresh air and cool breeze goes a long way in effecting the overall motivation level and mood.
Do not give up: Now you can work on the next steps to rework your resume, involve yourself in other networks , talk to recruiters, industry peers and apply for relevant or new positions. There are a ton on articles on this online.
So while layoffs can be a difficult and an emotional experience, but they can also be a catalyst for personal and professional growth. You have the choice to use this time the way you want to.
You finally have time to yourself. Use it wisely and remain motivated.

2 年Well summed up. What would you suggest to companies in this scenario? I would like to read that too as it is important how leading people in tech giants in Pakistan look at it. As internationally, there are many politically correct perspectives.
