The Bottom Line - Cyber Attacks, Why We Need to Talk About Spreadsheets and More

Welcome to the summer edition of the new-look Bottom Line Newsletter. While the UK has been battling with rain and thunderstorms, the digital world has seen a dark storm of its own.

Once again, a gale of cyber-attacks and data breaches swept through businesses and even the UK’s electoral register.

As well as the latest cyber security news, here’s a roundup of all the things we’ve been talking about over the past month.

Records of 40 Million UK Voters Stolen in Data Breach

The Electoral Commission has apologised after a cyber attack containing names and addresses of UK voters went undetected for a year.

The attackers managed to gain access to copies of the electoral registers, from August 2021.

Hackers also broke into its emails and "control systems" but the attack was not discovered until October last year.

Huge Data Leak from Police Service of Northern Ireland

This incident wasn't a targeted 'cyber attack', yet this data breach caused by human error is a perfect example of the importance of training your staff to be cyber-aware and why everyone in your company should take data processing seriously.

The information released included the surname, first initial, workplace location and unit of every serving police officer and civilian staff member, full and part-time; more than 10,000 people.

Their personal details were accidentally shared after a spreadsheet shared through a Freedom of Information request had a 'hidden' tab that opened up all the data.

From the PSP Archives...

Because of what happened with the PSNI last week, here's a reminder of why we encourage businesses NOT to manage their business operations or data through spreadsheets.
