Both/and is better than either/or when it comes to placebos

I spoke at a conference was about using placebo effects in medicine. When it comes to placebos most are believers and non-believers. The believers think placebos are more powerful than they are, and the non-believers think we need to focus on the best tests and treatments. I'm in between. I think doctors should evoke placebo effects without the placebo pills, by being more empathic and positive. I want doctors who are great at diagnosis and treatment and who are friendly and empathic. Most of the doctors I've been (lucky?) to have are both good at diagnosis/treatment and are understanding and friendly. It's not either a friendly idiot who is not good at their job or a doctor who knows how to make a good diagnosis but is rude. It's both and.

It’s all about attracting the correct candidates for BA & then Clinical training. Needs to be hands on with excellent clinical experience on wards. Bright, articulate, empathetic, candidates with the ability to get an accurate history, good examination technique & thorough questioning. Talking to the patient, listening instead of burying an aloof face in the pc! Support of junior Dr’s in hospitals by reg/senior reg. Shown once, then do procedure. Lead from the top - consultant. With surgery, consultant should always be on hand if there are problems. NHS is far too top heavy with manager’s who simply shuffle paper! Know very little, are totally inefficient & always quash whistle blowing! Cut the red tape & get Sister’s on the wards to manage their patients efficiently, with kindness & empathy. Return to proper standards, good training 1:4 rota’s for medic’s. Much better pay for nursing staff, increase numbers of staff dealing with a 28 bedded ward, reduce stress. If money from manager’s salaries was pooled, there would be more money for staff looking after the patients ie. nursing staff. Impliment proper training for nursing staff & re-instate a monthly salary. ie 1980’s model. It worked & nursing staff knew their patients.
