LinkedIn and poetry? Well, what if its an official one :) - a story that many of us have faced in our organisations? So here is a short Shakespearean tragicomedy dedicated to all those who have had rocky starts in their workplace...
My first day at work.
Good friend Hope
Accompanies me at such times.
Always makes me smile.
Even at strangers,
And soon to be friends.
Right now in Hope’s company
(While Anxiety watched)
I came to meet my new team.
Chatting at the table sat three
(Four more and the boss were away).
And they had strange company
Eerie looking, three-eyed, in shroud -
They called them Doubt (There were three).
Themselves hidden, they could see.
Long I pondered and tried
On how to address the three-eyed.
But couldn’t figure what they thought.
I said hello. Only to the team.
Then wondered aloud,
"Why the Doubts?"
“But oh!” the team said.
“These Doubts are our pets”.
“And are here to meet your Capability”.
My team then, in turn,
Wondered to my wonderment,
“Why bring Hope?”
All in chorus they said
“Do bring Capability instead.
You should have one?”
"Goodness!" I averred.
That’s who referred
Me to this job.
It may be so, they said.
But we haven’t seen it.
Not here. Not yet
Let’s agree, I said, from then
I’ll come to work with this friend
To meet the three and their three
I realised in these days
Doubt had funny ways
Refusing to meet Capability
The team’s other four (and boss)
Got to know all and more
Because Doubts talk to Doubts
Yes! And before we could meet
They developed pet peeves.
You know how pets rule our lives…
Capability and Hope in the end
My referee and friend
Had to go home resigned.
Oh! In the future dear boss you must
Let your admin Trust
Manage your team’s pets
Can I beg it be your main job
That you not let Doubts hobnob
Without Trust watching over at first?
p.s. This is intended just as a creative, cathartic exercise amidst our busy official lives. Also as a little entreaty that we as leaders learn to cultivate trust as a fundamental building block in our teams. Any resemblance to person living or dead is purely coincidental.
Appreciate your thoughts on content and format. And if you faced something similar my heart goes out to you...

6 年Excellent poem, Ram. Can relate very well to my experiences :-) ;-) Doubt is most often a child of Fear or a mask for Fear in the organizational dynamics. Though a sad ending of Hope & Capability overpowered by Doubt, glad to see renewed Hope & a reinforced Trust from the endurance gained from such iteration. All the best for the next iteration. :-)
