Boss->Manager->Leader->Coach (A path of "Privilege" or Enlightenment)

I am one of the luckiest one (or maybe not so lucky) who started his
career as Commissioned Officer at Indian Army at the age of 20 years
and 2 months. And as we know there has been perennial shortage of
officers in Defense Forces so like everyone, I was also given a
higher responsibility to be Company Commander for 125 Men from the
day I joined.?
Then I decided to pursue career in corporate post completing my MBA,
joined TCS as Lead of Recruitment Team with a team of around 10
recruiters. Following which also it has always been Team Handling
responsibilities throughout my career in various roles of HR.?
Reflecting back I come to realize that I never had an opportunity
to play an individual contributor role in my career spanning 21 Years
so far and probably have missed an important part of professional
journey.

Compare hardcore manufacturing companies of 70’s and the current
setup of IT Services multinational companies that have come to
provide employment opportunities to far larger youth in last
40 years. One very big difference that certainly can not go
unnoticed is the age group of “First Time Managers” in both
setups. It is no comparison of grey hairs as one with too many
and other almost nil.?
The impact of this difference has been huge on the lives of
millions atleast in India once you see it in the context where
the workforce spends a large number of productive hours dealing
with the supervisors and vice versa. The behavior and conduct
of each other immensely contribute to wellbeing of other and
hence very important to understand on how to play these roles.?
Unfortunately after having worked with some of the best organizations
in IT Industry, I can say confidently that this most important
training to shape up managers and teach them basic skills is
largely either missing completely or certainly not been given
importance that it deserves (I will be keen to get feedback if
its otherwise in your organization or in experience).?
As I see it, it’s a very similar life journey as of caterpillar ->
butterfly, and likewise from Boss -> Coach. The unfortunate
part is that while Butterfly gets assistance from most powerful
of all “The Nature” but Supervisor gets almost no help and hence
sour relations, bad experiences, unhappy times and worst of all
toxic environment of the organizations.?
In my experiences, I can count very few whom I have closely worked
with are been able to transform themselves with time from Manager
to Leader and finally to coach with very deep relationship with
the people they have been working with.?
I urge you to give a big shout out to such Leaders and Coaches
whom you have seen personally to have undergone transformation
by themselves and have been a big blessing in the lives of many
who look up to them!!.
