Having effective leaders in the workplace is incredibly important. In order to retain top talent, improve productivity and keep clients happy, you need the best and most effective leaders possible. Let's step into the shoes of Rosie Scott, Recruitment Manager at SteppingStones Recruitment! In this exclusive interview, Rosie shares insights into her leadership philosophy, lessons she's learned along the way, and strategies that she uses to drive her team to success.
How do you balance a culture that is both professional and fun?
By (re)assuring my team that the 2 things are not mutually exclusive. Fun does not need to mean unprofessional; it’s about loving what you do and using that passion to be the best professional in your field.
What is the most unexpected leadership lesson that you've learned?
As someone who has always liked to be liked, a huge leadership learning curve for me has been having difficult or uncomfortable conversations that you sometimes need to have; both with internal and external stakeholders. The most unexpected part of this? People still (most of the time) like you. And sometimes they even respect you more for having those open conversations. ?
How do you ensure your team feels heard and valued, even on hard or busy days?
By repeatedly impressing on them that no matter what, I will always make time for them, and then ensuring that I stand by that.
I like to think I prioritize praising the good, being a sounding board for the more challenging, and reflecting on the not so good. And I tell them I value them because sometimes it’s really important to say these things out loud!
How do you motivate and lead a hybrid/remote team?
By staying connected and by being aware of everything that is going on with everyone’s desks. Just because we are not always physically together, it does not mean that connection has to be lost. Teams messages, emails, phone calls, voice notes – you name it – we stay in touch! Having said that, motivation can also by intrinsic, and by empowering and trusting a team to work independently, the results speak for themselves. ?

In a zombie apocalypse, how would your leadership style help your team survive?
I am the kind of person who would never ever ask anyone in my team to do something that I would not do myself. So I’ll be there trying to dig us out of the rubble, and really hope they will join me. I am also acutely aware of my weaknesses so would 100% delegate to more capable members of my team to help us survive! Oh, and I have been known to tell the occasional (or frequent) terrible joke, so I would probably bring out my repertoire too!
