The Boss - Archaic term in the 21st Century

I value my freedom even in a structured environment. Sounds like a contradiction, but if you think about it, not so much.

We spend the majority of our lives in the workplace; either as "bosses" or as "employees". For decades I have been accepting this simple fact of life, the division between "rulers" and "ruled". Not anymore.

I believe in cooperative goal attainment. I do my best work, when I am given space and autonomy. I understand, that some of us are not comfortable with such arrangement; but for me it is the only way to be productive. Let me be, and I give you results. That's why, I think the age of the "Bosses" is quickly fading away. I am not disputing the usefulness of someone who can check my work, aid me, give suggestions, but do not breath down on my neck.

I'd rather be in an environment where I and my colleagues are encouraged to work, create and achieve together. We all have something valuable to contribute, utilize it. Naturally, someone has to be in a decision making position. I wouldn't necessarily call that person the Boss, more likely a well informed team member. Naturally, if you work alone you assume all those roles and mold it into one.

What do you think? What is your ideal workplace? Has the era of "Bosses" passed?

As the owner of the business, I am the team leader, sometimes. Most important people in my business are in the team, which includes "me". Everyone is encouraged to be part of the team working to ensure that our clients are served by all of the team. Without our clients we, as the team, have no income; no income means no business, no business means no work. Formula is quite simple. To work against this objective or goal means no job. So "we" are all the "bosses" and the "employees" - positions and identifiers are not important if we have no business or job. These terms are just become titles that would be part of history on our resumes. It is so important for the members of the team to minimize competition to ensure client service. Not all businesses demonstrate these objectives, but team members should grow in their jobs and be encouraged to love what they do. This is my business objective. I try to demonstrate these objectives with much success. Let's hope this helps.
