Boris resigns. Moving beyond blame and persecution to embrace the opportunity to BE the change!

As I watched the political events unfold over these past few weeks culminating in the resignation of Boris Johnson as the UK Prime Minister, I have to admit initially feeling a mixture of helplessness, disappointment and frustration. This only deepened as six male politicians were immediately named to step into key roles and I listened to potential candidates use terms like if I seize power!

As I have watched so many political leaders come and go over the years the one question I repeatedly ask myself is…

'how do we finally create a culture of diverse leadership excellence in our most senior public positions and communities that will model the transformations we need for our world to flourish?'

I supported leadership development from within our largest public and government bodies for over 20 years. I met some incredible consultants, coaches and Senior leaders who shared my passion for radical leadership change that could be powerful enough to be reflected in our highest leadership positions. A style of leadership that would powerfully model authenticity, and integrity and create spaces that supported individual self-actualisation, diversity, equality, inclusion, collaboration, and community.

I was so passionate and full of hope. I would work tirelessly to be creative with the limited budgets, to deliver the programmes to predominantly senior staff in ways that served them to have the most positive experiences and outcomes. Engagement was always high and feedback positive and I would love to say that I created radical and sustainable organisational change, but I didn’t. Year on year the same challenges for the majority appeared in the room no matter how much energy and creativity I applied.

If I’m being honest, I always knew it wouldn’t because the leadership approaches that were considered to be ‘acceptable’ to the organisation were very traditional and never focused on or funded to achieve the deep internal self-leadership that I knew was fundamental to radical transformation.

Of course, there were always the shining stars. The leaders who’s passion for their work transcended challenges and limitations within the organisation. They were a joy to work with and easy to hold up as ‘leadership success models’ however, behind the scenes burnout, stress, victimisation and persecution were a common reality for which there was no effective support.

Is this story an isolated one unique to these organisations? Unfortunately, not.

The leadership culture challenge we face globally is a complex one that will require a multi-faceted change of approach and priority at every level of our society. I know it can’t happen overnight.

I have accepted that in my lifetime I will continue to see repetitions of our current political stories but over the past few years I have been focused not on persecuting and casting blame but instead making it my mission to take responsibility for leading the change I want to see.

I did eventually step out of an internal corporate role to create my own consultancy, WeAchieve Associates Ltd. From this new space I embraced my experiences to create my GENIUS Leadership? Philosophy which now underpins all of my coaching and consultancy.

What is Genius Leadership? and how does it differ from traditional leadership approaches?

The GENIUS Leadership? philosophy is a powerful ‘inside-out’ approach to leadership development that can be flexibly applied to different organisations facing different challenges.

It recognises that every individual is born a GENIUS with exceptionally unique qualities and abilities, that require deep inward work to understand and release to create positive and impactful leadership cultures in our world. ?It provides a simple framework that takes the strain of the complexity of effective leadership development whilst also allowing flexibility to respond to the needs of every individual.

  • It allows leaders to finally unleash the complexity of their unique individual talents and discover new and powerful levels of self-leadership.
  • It helps strengthen their tactical skills, develop strategic competences and allow them to create powerfully diverse, equitable and inclusive workplaces with increased profitability and lower staff turnover.
  • ?It creates strategies and solutions to increase employee performance, reduce stress and improve health and wellness.
  • ?It also supports team performance to excel and to leverage generational perspectives whilst developing talent in supportive way. ?

It's 6 key components when embedded in an organisation create a purpose and values driven culture where the diversity of humanity can collaborate, contribute and flourish.

Demand for GENIUS Leadership? expertise has never been greater as the demand for outstanding leaders has long surpassed the current supply and our learning from our pandemic experiences create a powerful expectation for change.

So, I ask you… what is your GENIUS telling you that you need to do more of? The world is waiting for you to show up, here, now, today…no more compromise or sacrifice.

We in the US live in hope, too , but it’s even harder to hold onto, as our society at large had been politicized and fractured for a number of years. I will be particularly interested in what the brilliant Mary Ann has to say about this! Marilyn Roderick, MD Healing with Hope
