BORING BORING BORING

BORING BORING BORING

I’ve spent the last few weeks focussed on getting my next book, Take Off The Cape, ready to send to the editor.

During this time, my 3 kids have been home schooling and looking to me as some source of entertainment but with a book writing deadline, I haven’t had much time to spare.

My 15 year old daughter, Sophie, said to me last week, “Mum, you’re just sooo boring!’ Ouch!

Sophie’s comment made me remember a Christmas Party many years ago. I have a group of friends who I first met when all of our boys were in kindy together and we’ve stayed close ever since. Every year we get together the week before Christmas for a feast and a few bottles of champagne. There's also always a Secret Santa gift giving ceremony.

This particular year, a friend’s daughter was super excited about her present. She was around 4 or 5 years old. Her name was called and she ran up to grab her present. She ripped the paper and inside was a little baking set which I thought was very cute but obviously she was a little less impressed with the present. She threw it down and yelled ‘BORING, BORING, BORING’ .

We all burst out laughing. It was just the funniest thing to watch but I’m not so sure my friend who gave the present could see the funny side. Lol.

For me, editing a book; getting chapter sequences right, checking grammar and references etc is not that much fun. It’s actually pretty boring. It’s not what I enjoy doing but it’s something I know that’s important to do if I want to be a keynote speaker. I need new content.

So, how do I stay motivated?

It’s easy. By having a CLEAR VISION.

As I was writing my book, I kept imagining the book in my hands, reading a chapter from the book at the launch, a glass of champagne in my hand and being up on stage taking off a cape and mask and delivering the keynote.

The vision was so real to me that I could FEEL it. I still can. It’s like I’m already there.

As a leader, you have to do the same thing for your people. You have to give them a clear vision.

Your people have parts of their role that annoy them, leave them feeling frustrated, parts that they hate but things that are necessary to their role. They find these things demotivating and disheartening. They might procrastinate, complain or just avoid the work altogether.

Hopefully they love being part of your team and their role in the organisation but not every part of the day can be unicorns, butterflies and rainbows. Work can be tough and demanding.

It’s your role to get them through them tough times and out the other side. You need to motivate your team by making sure they can imagine the outcome of their hard work. Connect with them WHY they do what they do. Give them a vision and make it vivid. Make sure they can touch it, smell it, feel it. And keep reminding them of it. Hook them in.

A great leader harnesses the power of ANTICIPATION and gives their people something to look forward to.

Because sometimes work is just boring, boring, boring!!!!
