boring habit = 2x revenue

boring habit = 2x revenue

Some small, seemingly insignificant habits produce outsized results, and I’m going to tell you about a boring one that’s essential for freelancers, consultants, and solopreneurs.

In his book The Power of Habit, Charles Duhigg introduces the idea of "keystone habits."

Think about a row of dominos. With the flick of a finger, you knock the first domino down. It knocks over its neighbor. The chain reaction begins.

That’s what keystone habits do for you, and one of them for solo service providers is following up with past clients and silent prospects. Like I said, boring.

If this little habit can double our revenue, why don’t more of us have it?

How do successful freelancers cut through the noise?

Millions of freelancers have a skill set similar to yours, and in any marketplace, there will be winners and losers. If you want to win in the freelance marketplace, you have to stand out.

Seth Godin hit the nail on the head:

“In a crowded marketplace, fitting in is a failure. In a busy marketplace, not standing out is the same as being invisible.”

Get this: strong positioning isn’t metaphorically jumping up and down and yelling, “Hey! Look at me! I’m over here!” It's about making yourself the easy, obvious choice for the clients you really want to work with.

This playbook will guide you step-by-step in creating a positioning cheat code that sets you apart from the crowd.

About Austin L. Church

Hi, I'm Austin L. Church, a writer, marketing consultant, and business coach.

I started freelancing in 2009 after finishing my M.A. in Literature and getting laid off from a marketing agency. Freelancing led to a portfolio of mobile apps, tech startup, children's book, branding studio, and consulting practice.

Over the last 15 years, I've made north of $1.8 million as a creative entrepreneur, and looking back, I see so many missed opportunities.

That's why I'm so passionate about stacking up specific advantages and teaching freelancers, consultants, and creators how to do the same.

I want more of us to find our income-lifestyle sweet spot.

I’m taking a business and marketing course and this lines up 100% with what I’m learning. We’ve all also been on the other side, where we get an email, but we’re too busy to deal with it at the moment and then it gets buried. I’d be grateful for the follow up.

It's easy to forget the types of results these consistent habits can bring to our business. Thanks for reminding us to keep it simple!
