The Boring Book Of Business Success

The Boring Book Of Business Success

In the world of entrepreneurship, it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of new trends, As entrepreneurs, we’re constantly bombarded with the latest trends, the hottest new tools, and the idea that some magical strategy will be our ticket to success. But after nearly a decade of running businesses, some of which flopped and others that took off, I’ve learned that true success isn’t about the flashy stuff. It’s about mastering the basics, the stuff that might seem boring but really works.

The bad news is that chasing trends can waste a lot of time and money.

The good news is that sticking to the fundamentals builds a rock-solid business.

The ugly truth is that we often ignore the basics because they’re not as exciting as the latest shiny object.

The Power of Keeping It Simple

One of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever come across is from Alex Hormozi ,who says, “Simple scales, fancy fails.” What he means is that the basics are what will help your business grow steadily.

When you try to do too much, too fast, or get too complicated, things usually fall apart.

Think about it this way. When you have a challenge in business, you typically have two choices ??

Option A: You can chase after the latest trend, spend hours researching new strategies, and try to reinvent the wheel. The risk with this approach is that you waste time, energy, and money on something that might not even work. It’s like diving into a rabbit hole of information that might not be relevant to your specific situation.

Option B: You can focus on what you already know works. Instead of chasing something new, you double down on the basics, the strategies and practices that have proven successful for you in the past. The risk here is minimal; the worst thing that happens is you refine and improve what’s already working.

I’ve tried both approaches many times, and I can tell you that Option B is almost always the better choice.

The key has been sticking to what works, even when it feels repetitive or unexciting. That consistency has been the backbone of my success.

?? Stop Chasing the Latest Fad

When I was starting out, I wasted so much time and money trying to jump on every new trend. I thought if I just cracked the code on the latest social media platform or marketing tactic, my business would blow up. But in reality, what made the difference was doing the simple stuff well, like making consistent sales calls, building real relationships, and delivering great service. If you want to see real growth, focus on what’s already working and double down on that.

?? Start Branding Early, Even If It’s Scary

Branding doesn’t have to be some huge, intimidating thing. It’s really about how people see your business and what you stand for. The earlier you start shaping that, the better. Don’t worry if you’re not sure how, just start with the basics, like consistently sharing your values and mission. Over time, that will turn into a strong brand that people connect with.

?? Be Open to Feedback and Keep Learning

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is the value of feedback. It’s easy to think you know best, especially when you’re the one running the show, but getting outside perspectives is crucial. Whether it’s from a mentor, a peer, or even a customer, feedback helps you see things from different angles. It’s not always comfortable, but it’s how you grow. Combine that with a commitment to continuous learning, and you’ll be in a strong position to keep your business moving forward.

Here’s a quick exercise to get you started:

  • Write Down What’s Working: Grab a piece of paper and jot down the key activities in your business that consistently deliver results.
  • Double Your Effort: Pick one or two of those activities and commit to putting twice the effort into them over the next month.
  • Check Your Progress: Keep an eye on how this focused effort impacts your business. Chances are, you’ll start seeing some serious results by sticking to what works.
