Boring AI

There’s always a huge gulf between the way technology is depicted in film and the more humdrum reality. Robots in films are time travelling assassins. Robots in real life assemble gearboxes.
And it’s the same with AI. Science fiction AI makes us think of 2001: A Space Odyssey or The Creator, whereas the reality is that AI is a lot more… boring than that. But that’s no bad thing. Because boring AI is what’s going to revolutionise our daily tasks, turning them into a hassle-free - and hopefully less boring - experience. Imagine an AI autonomous agent dedicated to ensuring you never miss paying a bill, especially those annoying parking fines. It'll keep you on track, avoiding any late fees. Glamorous? No. But very handy.?
Then consider an AI invoicing assistant – an absolute lifesaver for anyone handling billing. It autonomously sends out your invoices and diligently chases them. Everything is handled seamlessly and efficiently.?

This move towards practical, “boring” AI is driven by two key factors. Firstly, developing AI with the level of autonomy shown in films comes with a raft of ethical and technological complexities. And secondly there's enormous value in automating routine tasks, so us humans can focus on more creative and strategic pursuits. We may not want AI to write our novels but we’d quite like it to check for spelling mistakes.?
What's emerging is AI that aligns with our current technological capabilities and market needs. There's a growing demand for ways to streamline processes and optimise time management, and that's precisely where this form of AI excels. In short, we’re quite happy to let AI do all the donkey work while we do something more productive.?
While AI as depicted in films is undoubtedly captivating, the real future of AI lies in its ability to seamlessly integrate into our daily life, making those humdrum tasks more straightforward and efficient. It's not about dramatic showdowns between humans and AI, but about technology quietly revolutionising our routine tasks in the most beneficial ways, hopefully! ANNA Money
