Bored Meeting or Board Meeting?

Bored Meeting or Board Meeting?

We’ve all heard the moans and groans about meetings!

A comment we often hear is that they are boring.?Maybe there are times when we should rename Board Meetings as ‘bored meetings.

There is nothing worse than sitting in a meeting with your mind wandering, listening to stuff that seems to have no relevance to you or your job and wishing you could be somewhere….anywhere…else.

However, it’s not just about boring meetings.

There are far worse kinds of behaviours going on in meetings than boring agendas.

We have seen all sorts of terrible behaviours in meetings. From conflict and arguments to power plays and politics, many meetings are very unproductive and create the opposite of what they were intended to achieve.

Meetings are meant to take things forward in a business, otherwise there is no point in having them.

Have you ever sat around waiting for everyone who to arrive before the meeting can start??

What about when a new topic of discussion is brought up 2 minutes before the meeting is due to end?

Or where the people who have prepared the reports for the meeting stand up and talk through their report.?And by that, I mean – they read the report out word for word. What is the point of that?

But what if you are part of the problem?

Maybe you are not getting your point across properly, or no one is listening because you are going on about something down in the weeds, and no-one really cares.?

Perhaps you are holding back form saying what needs to be said and “Bob” gets there first and talks all over you.

Maybe you are sitting in a meeting where you are the one who is bored.?But it is probably because you are not fully engaged with what’s going on – and that becomes a much bigger problem than the meeting itself.

Do you get embroiled in the politics of the situation and lose your perspective?

Good meetings require commitment. From everyone. And they require us to stand up and say what needs to be said, do what needs to be done and make those tough decisions as a team.

They require us to communicate well and create a positive impact.?They require radical candour and an adult state rather than a playground of sulking or jibing executives.?

So, how are your communication skills??How do you show up in your meetings?

Are you adding to the boredom, or the drama??Or are you creating positive impact on the business?

If you ask yourself just one question today, it’s this:

If I were watching myself on TV, what would I be seeing.

Am I being Conscious, Collaborative and Impactful?
