Border Force Apprentice - Paula's story

Border Force Apprentice - Paula's story

My name’s Paula and I work as an Apprentice in the CECPT (Clandestine Entrants Civil Penalty) Team within Border Force.

The reason I came to work for Border Force as an Apprentice was because I wanted a challenge and a change. I was with my previous employer, Eurotunnel, for over 20 years. My children are growing up and I needed to work full time. I saw the advert and thought it would be interesting. I have now been at Border Force for just over 6 months.

The work within the team is varied, and there are lots of processes and steps to each case. My day involves a range of duties, from setting up cases to obtaining payments by detaining vehicles at port.?

I enjoy being part of the team, and everyone is so friendly and helpful. The variety of work is also interesting and keeps me learning new things every day.?

Outside of work I have 4 children, a husband, 3 cats and help taking care of my dad who has dementia. It can be a struggle fitting everything in; however, the managers within my department are very flexible and help as much as they can when I need to make changes to work around appointments, for example. They really have helped and supported me to make the work fit in with my caring commitments in my personal life.

I enjoy making a difference. I have recently been offered a promotion to Executive Officer for 12 weeks. This will start in April, and I am very pleased with the opportunity. Having a solid career and pension in place is also very important. I am currently part of the training team and really enjoy assisting new team members to get settled in.?

If you’re not satisfied with the role, you have chosen here there is so much scope to move around and try new things. It is the best decision I have made, and I now feel fulfilled and accomplished in the work I am doing.?

I love that job.

This sounds really great, I was under the impression, rightly or wrongly that apprenticeships were something that you might do upon leaving school in order to join a trade or gain a qualification etc. But from what i'm reading its not only possible to do an apprenticeship later in life but also to do one with Border Force? does that then mean that when you complete your apprenticeship that you are then a fully qualified border force office as in that this might be another way into a different career so to speak? Intriguing, everyday is a school day ?? I'm curious (sorry more questions) what your tattoo policy is or what the restrictions might be? might sound like a silly question but I of course have tattoos and such jobs usually are not open to me because of this fact so thought I'd ask before got my hopes up so to speak. Thanks
