Boost Your Network
So much of what we do depends not only on what we know and who we know, but on how they know us. Networking is an essential part of a growing career. Here are 7 helpful principles to keep in mind as you reach out to people beyond your immediate circle.
?My work here is inspired by the work of the late Jack Killion and TheWrestleLife.com's Bob Evans.
1.????Focus on relationships, not getting stuff.
Networking without long-term thinking is robotic transaction. This is fine if you are at an ATM. However, other humans are logical, emotional and connected creatures. Keep an eye towards the future and build relationships that are conducive for amity…and repeat business down the line.
2. Accept that rejection is 95% of the game.
Some people will like you, some will dislike you. A few will love you, and another small set will despise you. Some of those will do both! Most people, however, will be largely indifferent. Things will fail to start, while others fizzle out. That’s ok! Try not to be personally hurt if you do not immediately connect with a specific person. The world is huge. Move on with cheer and goodwill, and if you are open, the right time may emerge for an unlikely friendship to grow!?
3.????Use LinkedIn to its fullest extent.
If you connect with someone in real life, please be sure to connect with them on LinkedIn. Include your LinkedIn URL on your business card.
This flows into…
4. Groups - online, offline and everywhere
Find people with common interests and let them encourage you, share their experiences, and connect you with their networks!
5. Be interested and ask sincere questions.
People can tell when you are going through the motions. It is far better to have 1-2 sincere, in-depth conversations with people in a night than it is to have 25 where you are clearly bored or mechanical. Find a common topic.
6. Arrange a specific future contact point.
Remember, set a who, what, when, where, why and how for a specific next meeting! Don’t let the moment fade!
And always remember…
7. Build rapport and serve.
