Boost Your Mental Health with Morning Sunshine and Exercise

The Power of a Sunrise Run

As I laced up my running shoes and went on my sunrise run on this cool October morning, the brain bath of endorphins kicked in ... and it reminded me with all that is going on.....how powerful exercise (such as running and walking outdoors) is for boosting our mental health, focus, and memory.

Add the bonus of seeing a beautiful sunrise and getting a boost of vitamin D.

The Science Behind the Glow

Recently, I tuned into a fascinating podcast featuring Mel Robbins and world-renowned neuroscientist Dr. Wendy Suzuki. Their discussion on the brain-changing benefits of exercise was both insightful and deeply authentic.

Harness the Power of Morning Light

According to a study from the NIH:

"When people are exposed to sunlight or very bright artificial light in the morning, their nocturnal melatonin production occurs sooner, and they enter into sleep more easily at night. The exposure to bright morning light has been effective against insomnia, premenstrual syndrome, and seasonal affective disorder (SAD)."

Take Action for Your Well-being

Feeling stressed? Struggling with sleep or focus? Here's what you can do:

  • Consult your doctor about your concerns
  • Commit to outdoor morning exercise by yourself or with a group - even a 10-minute walk before, during, or after work can make a big difference
  • Expose yourself to natural morning light for at least 15 minutes daily

Getting that bright morning sunlight in the morning paired with optimal exercise is so helpful for overall health, and boosts endorphins and circadian function. Sometimes I like a good stretch out in the yard while the sun is beaming on my face and body- makes the rest of the day better! Thank you for writing this Amy
