Boost Your Mental Health with Colours

Boost Your Mental Health with Colours

There is a growing concern regarding people falling into isolation from working at home and hopelessness from the ever-increasing global crises. Today we face new challenges needing to prioritise what is essential, affecting mental health. There is a higher depression rate growth than before the pandemic, and emotions are the "hot topic" in many fields.?

One in four people in the UK will have a mental health problem at some point in their life, where anxiety and depression are the most common mental health problems. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5th Edition, depression affects how an individual feel, thinks and acts and is the fourth leading cause of social incapacitation in the world. The most common symptoms of depression are persistent sadness, loss of energy, lack of concentration, decreased or increased appetite, loss of interest/pleasure, and feelings of worthlessness/guilt. Individuals with Anxiety disorder experience chronic, constant fear of worry concerning health, family, and financial status. This can continue throughout the day, in some cases each day affecting social activities, home and work life.

Moreover, stress is a negative emotional experience followed by predictable biochemistry changes and touches more people every day. Stress happens when an individual is experiencing overwhelm within the environment, such as work or home. Meaning that person is stressed when too much is expected beyond their capacity, in terrifying or troubling incidents that are often triggered by past traumatic events.?

With that in mind, there is a growing need to provide efficient solutions for those who secretly suffer from emotional overloads such as depression, stress, anxiety and fear. Various psychological management interventions such as CBT, Psychotherapy, and Mindfulness can aid individuals who struggle with challenging emotions. However, not many people know that colours are one of the most effective ways to deal with mental health challenges as they have psychological modalities for feelings.?

" As a little girl, I heard the legend saying that you can find a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. But, since the rainbow can only be seen at a distance, the gold seemed to be forever elusive. Today, I can see the rainbow very close. So, what was elusive then is very possible today."

And with that in mind, I developed Rainbow Method based on colour therapy, psychology, quantum physics and neuroscience. This method provides the best results for each age group. You can boost your emotional health without years in therapy by wearing special colour glasses for at least 20 minutes a day.?

To understand this new concept better, we need to start with Albert Einstein's "Everything in Life is Vibration. And human brain, which is responsible for our emotions, also has brainwaves such as Alfa, Beta, Theta, Delta, and Gamma. Every thought and emotion has its vibrational frequency or wave frequency. Emotions such as love, joy, passion and happiness are the highest frequencies, whereas emotions such as fear, anger, grief, guilt and jealousy are the lowest frequencies. So, when we are awake and alert, our brain operates in a Betha state of activity which is important for effective functioning throughout the day. However, when the voice of your "inner critic" gets lauder and self-limiting beliefs rule your day, the higher you go into the Betha range, creating stress, anxiety, paranoia, and fear. Thus, when the person is happy, relaxed and enthusiastic and does experience a low level of stress, alpha waves are seen in the resting state of the brain, being in here and now or the "power of presence". Also, Alpha waves aid overall mental coordination, calmness and mind/body integration.?

In regular meditation, there is an increase in alpha waves which relaxes the brain waves and reduce the beta waves responsible for thoughts. Increased alpha brain waves are a natural anti-depressant, but not everyone is capable of practising daily meditation. That is why colour can be essential for those seeking more accessible solutions to their mental health challenges.?

A growing body of research proves that colours are the easiest and fastest tools to help mental health and regulate brain functions. Philosopher and poet Johan Wolfgang von Goethe 1840 believed that colours could affect our lives. In 1920, Dinshah P. Ghaldi invented a Spectro- Chrome therapy, a projector that transmitted a colour to heal several illnesses for only 1 hour a day. After 37 years of practice in the Philadelphia hospital under Ghali's supervision, Dr Kate W.Baldwin knew that colours could produce a quicker and more effective way to cure the human body. Today, many researchers, including Dr Klinghardt, practice the power of colours regarding our emotions.?

William Shakespeare believed that the eyes mirror our physical and emotional health. The eyes are the significant entry points into the body and extension of our brain. There is a relationship between mental patterns and the functioning of the eye. In 1942, a Russian scientist, S.V. Krakov, examined colour vision and its relationship to the autonomic nervous system. He found that red and blue arouse different feelings and emotions.

Moreover, when beamed into the eyes, colour light can activate and repress memories from childhood (Dr Klinghardt). All the memories of physical or emotional trauma are held by circuitries in the limbic system, especially in the hippocampus and amygdala. These memories can be accessed with the correct colour wavelength using coloured glasses.

According to the theory of constructed emotion, a human brain invisibly creates everything one experiences, including emotions. The pineal gland's function located deep in the brain core is significant in regulating the body's vital functions such as puberty, inducing sleep and influencing our moods. Moreover, the pineal gland is regulated by environmental light changes. Furthermore, the effect of our psychology and philosophy are mediated by the daily rhythmic selection of melatonin which is highest at night and lowers during the day. Sending light/colour energy tricks the brain into springtime and alleviates the depression created by short darker days. Also, we must remember that the region in our brain responsible for the emotional process and emotional intelligence is called the amygdala. This part of the brain causes intense emotions such as aggression and fear. By using specific colours and their waves, we can reduce the impact of these emotional processes and better self-regulate.?

Can different colours create physiological as well as psychological effects on us??

The answer to this question becomes apparent when we behold a rainbow and realise how this miracle of nature affects us emotionally. Colour's power is to re-establish confidence, willpower open to spontaneity, love, laughter, and deep inner happiness. It strengthens our mind and body and releases us unconsciously from the restrictions we put on ourselves. Colour stimulates us, so we can take back our power and acknowledge our wisdom. It clears our minds, so we see our options and make the right decisions. No one is immune to colour – it reaches deep into our psyche, developing our awareness of ourselves and others. It allows us to manage our behaviour and reactions to feelings around us and regulates emotional reactions such as frustration, excitement, stress, and anger.?

"Colour is the missing link that connects us to all that is and to our limitless potential." June McLeod

Thus, for you to understand how each colour can help to boost your mental health, here is a short description:?

  • Red symbolises vital grounding energy that allows us to regenerate our bodies. Very often used to raise blood pressure and create an appetite for more in life. Very good for people who lack courage, protection, stability, sexual drive and money issues.?
  • Orange symbolises happiness and health. It helps with optimistic thinking towards life and supports those who experience relationship challenges. It allows people with low libido and boosts creativity. It is highly recommended for those who experience stuckness in any addiction and those who struggle to process grief, sadness and lack motivation.?
  • Yellow symbolises happiness and health. It helps with optimistic thinking towards life and supports those who experience relationship challenges. It allows people with low self-esteem and little creativity; it is highly recommended for those who experience learning difficulties, depression, fear of judgment and low confidence.?
  • Green symbolise nature and growth and stands for rest, relaxation and regeneration. Green calms in a neutral, positive sense, and the ultimate healing colour supports the transformation process. Best to use for stress reduction, relaxation and abundance.?
  • Blue symbolise water, and the air is considered the deepest and purest of all colours. Very good for deep relaxation and sleep issues. Very are often used for headaches and migraines. For those who struggle with self-expression, insomnia, ADHD, and autism, the blue colour is the best solution.?
  • Indigo symbolise the third chakra and also connects green and violet energies. It is the expansion of spiritual sublimity, wisdom and perfection. The colour indigo is a valuable aid on the spiritual path and inner truth. Best to use together with meditation practice and for practising intuition and higher mind.?
  • Violet symbolises tolerance, consideration and idealism. Violet is the colour of the mind and has the corresponding effects on the subconscious. These highest violet vibrations combine two opposite colours of red and blue to balance and enhance intuition and spirituality.?
  • Magenta symbolises universal and emotional balance and represents the 8th chakra responsible for akashic records—best for those who lack divine love, connection to inner potential and low support.?
  • Turquoise symbolises hope; good fortune gives us a boost of positive mental energy that clears the path to inner growth. Emotions and minds can be more easily reconciled with turquoise. They can help with self-respect, communication, trust issues, empathy, and calmness.?
  • Rose symbolises romance, love, beauty, and calmness. Pink is the colour of the noble, emotional feelings of love on a higher spiritual level of tenderness, gentleness and willingness to give. Great for people who struggle with aggression and anxiety, self-acceptance and lack of joy in life.?

There are many shades of each colour produced by a little different wavelength. Just as sound waves are tuned to each other to create harmony between mind and body, colour frequencies have the power to reactivate synapses in the brain which were previously blocked as well as stimulate brain waves. According to Wang (2021), colour significantly produces alpha waves inducing relaxation and stress recovery. When colour is transmitted from the eye to the brain, the brain's release hormone affects emotions, mental clarity and energy level. Back in the day, to experience the power behind colour, researchers had to place participants in coloured rooms for up to 1 hour a day to get the results. Today we have colour glasses which can be used directly, so instead of looking at the colour; we are looking through the colour, which has better effects on our brain waves and the emotions they produce.???

Moreover, by using specific colours, unremembered trauma in the body often disappears, and we experience better mental and physical health. So, next time you are stressed or anxious, think about the colour that will help to slow down your Betha waves and experience a better emotional state.?
