Boost Your Career: Prioritising Digital Skills for Success

By Liz Wilkinson SFHEA , Senior Careers Consultant, University of London Careers Service

Deciding which Digital skills to enhance when you are developing your career involves a strategic approach that considers the impact you want them to make in your preferred job roles.

Whether you are a Career Starter, Changer, or Developer, identifying the digital competencies that add the most value to your professional sector, and how your existing skills can complement them, is crucial.

??Research Your Preferred Sector

Start by researching the technologies that are driving change within your preferred professional sectors. For example, in Marketing, skills in Digital Marketing, SEO, and Data Analytics are critical.

In Finance, understanding how Fintech innovations are continuing to evolve will help you make smart choices.

You also need to consider which of your human strengths would benefit from a digital supercharge. Are you primarily a Creator, a Communicator, or an Analyst? Which digital skills best add impact to those roles? Recognising and leveraging your Global Employability Skills and personal strengths can provide a strong foundation as you acquire new digital competencies.

?Network to Save Time & Effort

Networking with professionals in your preferred industry can provide insights into the specific skills that are in real demand. While internet research can be great for taking an overview of the latest developments, real time conversations with people actually doing the job can help you differentiate the misplaced assumptions from the genuinely impactful application of technology for improved service delivery, reduced operating costs, and customer delight.

So, as part of your Digital Skills development, prioritise networking – it will save you time. ?

??Broad vs. Specialised Knowledge

For most topics and roles, breadth of understanding (the key 20%) can be more valuable than depth of specialist knowledge. So, spending a few hours studying YouTube videos or taking short courses from providers can really build your confidence and credibility. ??Embracing Ongoing Learning

If you are a 英国伦敦大学 student, it’s wise to review how you are developing your digital skills during your studies. How are you using technology to manage your study time and focus? Are you making the most of opportunities to collaborate and communicate with your fellow students online? How well do you understand the digital formats used in assessments?

Honing your digital study skills can not only improve your grades but also demonstrate a Growth Mindset of continuous learning and Adaptability & Resilience – qualities highly valued by future employers.

The digital landscape is dynamic, and staying ahead requires ongoing education and skill development. By proactively updating your skills and embracing new learning opportunities, you can maintain your career development resilience in the face of continual technology changes.
