A Boost for the New Generation of Students
Entering the financial world of a new country and in a new language can be quite intimidating, especially for those of us just starting our journeys. It's not uncommon to wonder, "Am I really prepared for this?" That’s why opportunities to connect with alumni who were once in the same position are so invaluable. Recently, I had the chance to attend a seminar where three graduates shared their personal stories and career paths, and it was a moment that really hit home. Their experiences weren’t just inspiring—they gave me a concrete vision of what’s possible for all of us.
For those of us gearing up to dive into the financial sector, hearing firsthand how these alumni navigated their paths was both reassuring and energizing. They once faced the same uncertainties and challenges we’re experiencing, and seeing how they stayed focused, set goals, and ultimately built successful careers showed me that achieving success is not some far-off dream. With the right mindset and effort, it’s completely within reach. Their stories also reminded me that while our studies can feel demanding and even exhausting at times, they’re laying the groundwork for something much bigger.
On a personal note, these stories resonated deeply with me. For many of us who’ve chosen to study abroad, the journey comes with its own set of challenges—new country, new culture, new language. It’s tough, no question. But hearing the success stories of those who’ve been through it all and come out the other side thriving gave me a renewed sense of determination. It made me realize that, yes, the path is hard, but it’s far from impossible.
What stood out even more was the role our institution, Centre for Business | George Brown College , plays in creating these opportunities for us. It’s not just about giving us the academic tools we need to succeed; it’s about connecting us to people who have already made it in the industry. Having access to alumni who’ve been where we are now makes such a big difference. It shifts how we think about our careers and shows us that the relationships we build here can have a long-lasting impact on our futures.

The seminar also offered a chance to meet and network with professionals who once walked the same halls we do. That’s a huge advantage, especially as we start thinking about our careers. It’s a powerful reminder that the connections we make during our time at George Brown aren’t just for the here and now; they’re building blocks for future success.
I want to take a moment to thank everyone who made this seminar possible. Thanks to Monica Cardona , Vishal Sharma , Boney Asnani, MBA , George Brown College , and special thanks to Katidja Youssouf, MBA for organizing such a meaningful event that left us all feeling more confident and prepared for what’s to come.
But I believe this shouldn’t just be a one-off event. Colleges like George Brown College should continue to sponsor and promote these spaces for alumni to connect with students. It’s especially important for people like me who have come from other countries. Canada is a country built by immigrants, and hearing these success stories from those who have faced similar challenges shows us that the path forward is not only possible—it’s achievable.
This kind of initiative should be woven into every program, becoming a fundamental part of the student experience. It shouldn’t be a once-in-a-semester thing, but something that happens regularly, creating a culture where alumni return to share their journeys. Building this connection between alumni and current students not only inspires us but strengthens the community within the institution. We’re not just learning for ourselves; we’re learning from those who came before us and building a future together.
