“Dad, you’re such a boomer”
At first, I thought it was a term of endearment.?
But I could tell by the tone of my son’s voice that it was, in fact, the precise opposite.
Which got me thinking about the generational terms that affect us all.?
It’s easy to see why there is so much confusion about generational cohorts.?If you’ve ever felt muddled by this "alphabet soup" of names — you’re not alone.
The breakdown by age looks like this:
Baby Boomers: Baby boomers were born between 1946 and 1964.
Gen X: Gen X was born between 1965 and 1979/80.?As I was born in 1965, strictly speaking I belong in this camp, but I’m not going to split hairs.?I wear my ‘Boomer’ badge with pride for reasons I will elaborate on.
Gen Y: Gen Y, or Millennials, were born between 1981 and 1994/6
Gen Z: Gen Z is the newest generation, born between 1997 and 2012.
Gen A: Generation Alpha starts with children born in 2012 and will continue at least through 2025.
So why am I proud to be labelled Boomer?
Because we are the generation that has a strong work ethic, rolled up our sleeves, and get s**t done.
Occasionally, I get my car cleaned in one of the countless car wash establishments scattered up and down the UK where I live.

But I never encounter British teenagers engaging in this labour intensive but lucrative work.
No.
Invariably, they are manned by Eastern Europeans who have the kind of work ethic that exemplify the term ‘elbow grease’.
Said teenagers seem to be far too preoccupied with trying to become social media influencers without too much work nowadays.
That being said, I do have some extraordinarily inspirational young people in my enormous network.
One of them is just 21 years old and he already has several CEO’s of multinational companies on speed dial.
Why?
Because he realized from a young age the importance of networking.?
I operate more than 200 WhatsApp Groups to facilitate virtual business networking.
The latest one – which I created about an hour ago – is called ‘Boomers Unite!’
If you are a fellow Boomer, I hope to ‘see’ you in there.
For we are all hardwired to engage in this ubiquitous socio-economic activity.
Networking. Works.
Irrespective of what generation you belong to.
