??Boom in the EV car market

The number of registrations of new EV cars is increasing rapidly and this is going to have huge changes in many aspects that affect the production and use of EV’s?

Between the years 2019 and 2022 electronic battery-only vehicles (EV’s) have increased by over 400% in EU countries alone. Reaching a total that now surpasses well over three million cars in total in the EU.

It is estimated that that the increase in electronic battery-only cars -EV’s, is to continue growing at high rates within the EU and other advanced economical areas on a worldwide basis. EV’s within the EU now represent over 20% of new car sales and the number is increasing.

Additionally, we must bear in mind that these figures are only taking into consideration figure for cars. Forecasts tell us that the number of electronic trucks and buses also have to increase in the following years.

This will mean important changes for different areas of this market!

The increasing use of electronic battery-only rechargeable-EV cars is going to have an impact on many aspects that affect different parts of the market. ?One of the most important areas of change, is going to be setting up an adequate number of EV charging stations. However, firstly let’s analyze in general, important areas of change.

?Areas of change with the increase in EV’s ??

? Car manufacturing: a large proportion of the production chain has changed, as there are many new items that have not been used before, with combustion engine cars. All those electric components related to the engine, that normal combustion engine cars do not use, need to be introduced. Also battery and the SW is a key part of the EV production and the manufacturers are facing a huge change in their core processes because of it, as well as facing a scarcity of electronic components.

This has meant that some combustion engine car manufactures have found it difficult to move towards an increased percentage of electronic car production. As car manufacturing is such a large industry on a worldwide basis, this is having important effects.

? Car users: a very large percentage of car users are currently using combustion engines. In order to move to electronic cars their driving and recharging habits will have to change. They will have to move from acquiring petrol or diesel at petrol stations, to thinking how and when they will need to charge their cars from the electrical grid and EV charging stations.

Car users will have to recharge their car batteries using different methods. At home or at work, whilst the cars are parked. Whilst the users are parked during their shopping or at the cinema, for example. However, long journeys will have to be planned bearing in mind that recharging EV’s will need to take place during the journey.?As recharging EV’s will take longer, than what it takes to fill up at a petrol station, this needs to be taken into account.

? Electrical Grid: taking into account the changes that car users need to plan for recharging the car batteries, the current electrical grid needs to be adapted. Especially throughout the geographical areas where EV’s drive through. Overall electrical grid operators have three type of chargers:

  • Level 1 chargers which have standard domestic electricity levels.
  • Level 2 chargers which have a slightly higher throughput of electricity, designed to be put into place in specific domestic chargers and also at specific public sites.
  • Level 3 chargers using DC throughput, which are those designed to be used for rapid charging on public sites. Especially at what will called specific EV recharging sites.

How will telecommunications be influenced by EV market changes.

There are various important areas in which telecommunications will have to adapt to important changes, especially in the area of battery recharging.

1)?????Security – Cable theft: The amount of dense cable wires that will be used across the globe to connect to cars for recharging will increase dramatically. Unfortunately, there are already many people who are dedicated to copper wire theft, and this will increase, unless it is controlled with security cameras and more. All these devices will need to be connected to via fixed line or 5G, so that sites are controlled from a control center.

2)?????Security – Car theft: Many of the new EV recharging sites will be installed underground. Areas which will not have a constant throughput of people. Again, security cameras and security devices will need to be installed and connected to control centers, so that car theft can be totally controlled.

3)?????Control of recharging areas: As the amount of public recharging areas increase, so will the amount of car parking areas that should only be used by EV’s, that are actually in the process of recharging. They should not be occupied by EVs that have finished recharging, cars that are not charging at all or simply combustion engine cars. Specific devices with telecommunication connectivity will have to allow these areas to be managed online.

4)?????User experience & management of recharging areas: In order to ensure that as soon as a car finish recharging, the driver should be sent a SMS or other push message. This will enable the space to be made available for others. Moreover, for a good UX, the driver should have total control of the recharging. Cameras to see the car for security, information on the amount of electricity, the cost, etc. For all this, there needs to be telecommunication connectivity from the EV recharging point to the driver.

Overall, any recharging site needs to be fully controlled with connectivity and edge computing devices to connect with the central site, security companies and the drivers (clients).

This would be with fixed lines, 5G or other non-wireless technologies that allow connectivity, where the named options are not available. All depending on the scenario. ?

As mentioned many times the growht of the EV market is unstoppable, the infraestructures should follow supporting this. But usually the communications are not being considered as important as they should. An EV charging station without the correct project is not feasible, including a correct analysis and communications and cybersecurity deployment.

Interesting newsletter on an overview of the EV market. We are always experiencing market & technological changes, but some changes have a huge impact on many market sectors. And this is definitely one of those cases. It will have a huge impact on car manufacturing, components, the users/drivers, etc. But surely it's also going to have an important effect on the telecommunications market, for many reasons.
