Boolean is the best way to go

Part 4 of the LinkedIn Recruiter Simplified series.

What do you think you should use? LinkedIn job titles or Boolean.

I will use the same example of a PHP developer in Sydney.

LinkedIn Job titles

1. For the first test, use the LinkedIn job titles:

115 results, wow, look like a hit. 115 PHP developers are spammed to "death" because everybody who uses the standard LinkedIn search finds the same PHP developers. Put them in a project, and a standard InMail will be sent out.

2. For the second test, exclude the LinkedIn job titles and enter the word PHP into the search.

28 other results. This individual N.X.C.W. is a PHP Developer. Why can't LinkedIn find this person? Sometimes, job titles are misplaced and can't be found.

Another example that is clearer to me is PHP Dev instead of a developer.

3. We used some basic Boolean for the third test to find more results.

In this case, I used some basic Boolean (developer OR programmer OR dev OR "software engineer") and entered PHP as a keyword in the keyword section. And I have excluded the 115, as you can see.

5.2K+ results vs 115 results. There are way too many. I know. But imagine that you entered more keywords or excluded some titles, companies, or keywords. This way, you won't start with a talent pool of only 115, but you start with a broader talent pool.

I made a point here; there is much to gain with just some basic Boolean.

Boolean Job titles in Job titles or in keywords?

This is one of the common mistakes I run into when training people. They love the number of results. But you can't control the results.

Let's say that you search in this keyword section. (developer OR programmer OR dev OR "software engineer") AND PHP. You get tons of results. Sure, 14K+, to be exact. But also this kind of results, lead architect who used to be a developer 20+ years ago.

So my tip if you want to search for job titles. Use Boolean—research how they are called in other companies and search for current titles only.

And now I used this nested search (((SDET OR "Software Development in Test" OR "Softwware Test Engineer" OR "Software Engineer in Test" ) OR (QA AND (Auto OR Automation))) OR ((Software OR Engineer) AND (Auto OR Automation OR QA OR Test) AND Test)) Which gave 857 Results
