Bookshop Day: Books from the Eating Better alliance

Bookshop Day is an annual celebration of independent and high street bookshops run by The Booksellers Association , which aims to highlight the cultural importance of books and bookshops, and celebrate the people that bring the two together, our wonderful booksellers!

Here are just some of the books published by our wonderful Eating Better alliance members and partners.

The Meat Paradox: Eating, Empathy and the Future of Meat

Written by Rob Percival, Soil Association

"In The Meat Paradox, Rob Percival, an expert in the politics of meat, searches for the evolutionary origins of the meat paradox, asking when our relationship with meat first became emotionally and ethically complicated. Every society must eat, and meat provides an important source of nutrients. But every society is moved by its empathy. We must all find a way of balancing competing and contradictory imperatives. This new book is essential reading for anyone interested in the origins of our empathy, the psychology of our dietary choices, and anyone who has wondered whether they should or shouldn't eat meat."

Sixty Harvests Left: How to Reach a Nature-Friendly Future

Written by Philip Lymbery , Compassion in World Farming

"Taking its title from a chilling warning made by the United Nations that the world's soils could be lost within a lifetime, Sixty Harvests Left uncovers how the food industry is threatening the planet.

Put simply, without soils there will be no food: game over. And time is running out. From the United Kingdom to Italy, from Brazil to the Gambia to the USA, Philip Lymbery, the internationally acclaimed author of Farmageddon, goes behind the scenes of industrial farming and confronts 'Big Agriculture', where mega-farms, chemicals and animal cages are sweeping the countryside and jeopardising the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat and the nature that we treasure. In his investigations, however, he also finds hope in the pioneers who are battling to bring landscapes back to life, who are rethinking farming methods, rediscovering traditional techniques and developing technologies to feed an ever-expanding global population. Impassioned, balanced and persuasive, Sixty Harvests Left not only demonstrates why future harvests matter more than ever, but reveals how we can restore our planet for a nature-friendly future."

Rebugging the Planet: The Remarkable Things that Insects (and Other Invertebrates) Do - And Why We Need to Love Them More

Written by Vicki Hird , Sustain: The alliance for better food and farming and The Wildlife Trusts

"Meet the intelligent insects, marvellous minibeasts and inspirational invertebrates that bring life to our planet.

Discover how we can 'rebug' our attitudes and embrace these brilliant, essential insects, so that we can avoid an 'insectageddon' and help each other thrive. In Rebugging the Planet, Vicki Hird shows us that bugs are beautiful, inventive and economically invaluable."

With the Land: Reflections on Land Work and 10 years of the Landworkers' Alliance

"With the Land marks 10 years of the LWA. It explores what it means to work with the land, reflects on the wider land work movement and celebrates what is achievable through collective action.

It links the past, present and future by bringing together voices from our membership and beyond.

Filled with song lyrics, texts, photography, poetry, a letter and recipe the individual pieces in the book cover issues such as access to land, the importance of seed sovereignty, gender and land work, as well as the ecological and social imperative of creating a better food and land work system by working in harmony with nature."
