Books As Your Personal Mentor for National Mentoring Month

Books As Your Personal Mentor for National Mentoring Month

As we celebrate National Mentoring Month this January, we’re reminded of the invaluable role mentorship plays in our personal and professional growth. However, mentorship doesn’t always have to come from a person. Books can act as powerful mentors, providing insights and guidance that shape our journey.

Strategic reading is a deliberate process that helps you gain new perspectives, refine your strengths, and address areas of improvement. Books can guide you through the experiences of others, offering you lessons with no direct interaction. In fact, James Altucher suggests you can “outsource 90 percent of mentorship to books and other materials,” equating 200-500 books to one good mentor.

To turn books into effective mentors, approach them with intention. First, set a clear purpose for your reading. What do you want to learn? Next, prepare your mind by approaching each book with an open and focused attitude. Preview the content to get an overview of the ideas and focus on the most impactful concepts. Read selectively, picking out the big ideas that resonate with your goals. Finally, the most important step. Apply the lessons you learn in your life and work.

This National Mentoring Month, consider books as a powerful tool in your mentorship toolkit. By reading strategically, you can continue to grow, learn, and develop without limits. And strategic reading allows you to digest more great books.

I've read that success leaves clues. If James Altucher is using book mentorship to become a better human then we'd better use books to improve ourselves.
