Books in your life

Books in your life

JK Rowling once said, ‘I do believe something very magical can happen when you read a good book.’

It was only in the last five years, that I got into the flow of reading books, that made me realise, what JK Rowling said, is so true. We all, at a subconscious level, are aware of the importance of reading books, but still, many of us escape reading or prioritise entertainment over education. In this article, I would like to share three reasons why I think we should read books.

1) Reading a book is like having a dialogue with the author. It is like a two-way conversation where the author puts forward a point, a concept or a philosophy and challenges the reader. The reader, on the other hand, based on personal experiences, values and beliefs, challenges the author. Imagine yourself having a conversation with Warren Buffet, Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates through this book, ‘Think like a Titan’, while you sip a warm cup of coffee. This dialogue will help you reinvent yourself and change your perspective enormously.

2) Reduces the timeframes by expediting learning. Imagine, you have just started a new business. You learn an idea or a strategy through a book, which would take your company onto an upward trajectory path in just six months, which otherwise would have taken you two years.

3) Helps overcome a bad day. If you are experiencing a bad day, for example, you were not successful in closing a sales deal or the project you were working on, did not go as per your expectations, it is quite natural to feel anxious or stressed out. Reading a book, like, ‘Long walk to Freedom’, an autobiography of Nelson Mandela, who spent 27 years in incarnation on Robben Islands, will show you hope. It will remind you that life is like a roller-coaster ride, full of hardships, challenges, but there is light at the end of the tunnel.

So, if you are not in the habit of reading, just start with 15 minutes a day. However, if you are an avid reader, please do not hesitate to share your favourites :)
