Books are like people,
when first you see them -
an eye-catching cover draws
you in,
and makes a lasting first impression
many others
have also seen.
Chapter One's a first
conversation,
sometimes, it resonates,
striking a chord.
You want to drink coffee
with that book or person,
hanging on their every word.
All of the book’s middle chapters
are like a dialogue,
over months or years -
some chapters intrigue you,
and you have to surmise,
or else they may end in a big surprise.
Much like a friend,
each interaction
grows the relationship,
from when you first met.
At first superficial,
the liking grows deep -
and, sometimes,
you may be swept off your feet.
You want to know secrets only they can speak of,
you feel them, and breathe them,
like falling in love.
The smell of them sends you into rapture,
yet try to describe it - that strange allure.
And when they have got you into their web,
you can’t put them down,
when you go to bed.
So you cuddle up close to them -
in the small hours,
surrender to their magical powers.
The nuance of language,
each new turn of phrase,
beguiles you, enchants you,
till the end of days.
And when you read them over once more,
you find hidden treasures,
more than before.
More than just books, and more than the covers,
books remind me of true friends, and lovers.
