Books to Read as You Contemplate if You are an Alcoholic or Not
Tim Sweeney J.D. CCJAP
Addiction Interventionist | Treatment Specialist | Case Management | Crisis Intervention | Healthcare Attorney
As an Interventionist I am often asked what books are good to read when seeking knowledge about addiction and recovery. My answer is "anything you can get your hands on that gets you thinking about the disease."
Alcoholics Anonymous (The Big Book) is of course a book that offers real, tragic, stories from those afflicted with alcoholism, and personal testimony on overcoming the disease. The Big Book is also home to The Twelve Steps which most of us have heard of this day in age. This solution oriented book is often intimidating to those who are truly close to admitting defeat from alcohol.
Solutions and or answers can come in many literary styles. This week I would like to highlight Sarah Hepola's memoir, Blackout: Remembering the Things I Drank to Forget. This sad yet comical book hits on the progressive nature of the disease, and Hepola's personal journey of surrendering and recovering from alcoholic hell. I would love to hear what you think of this book or other great reads on this same topic.
