Books are like Netflix, for growth

Books are like Netflix, for growth

I was inspired by Gagan Biyani (CEO and Co-Founder at Maven. Previously Co-Founder at Udemy)'s recent post on what it means to be a generalist. Being one myself, I’d like to share a professional development curriculum with my fellow generalists for their information, perusal, and benefit.

Note:

  • The curriculum involves books (not courses), for I believe books inspire and transform the individual through captivating storytelling, an element missing in most courses.
  • The curriculum is designed based on my belief that we need to master ONLY 2 skills and 1 mindset to succeed (dare I say, to be the best) professionally: the ability to think analytically and clearly, the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, and having a bias towards massive execution.
  • Curriculum format: Title - Author (My synthesis on what the book is about )

Pre-read:

  1. Start with Why - Simon Sinek (Give meaning to your professional and personal lives)

Phase 1: The ability to think analytically and clearly

  1. Remarkable - David kronfeld (What it means to be analytical and insightful)
  2. Good Strategy Bad Strategy - Richard Rumelt (The blueprint for sound strategy)
  3. Bullet Proof Problem Solving - Charles Conn , Robert McLean (Problem-solving techniques used by the best consultants)
  4. A New Way to Think - Roger Martin (Alternate perspectives on your business model and the role of its stakeholders)
  5. Clear Thinking - Shane Parrish (How to overcome biases when taking decisions)

Phase 2: The ability to communicate effectively and clearly

  1. Demand Side Sales 101 - Bob Moesta (Understand the human element behind a sale and transform how you sell)
  2. Smart Brevity - Jim VandeHei , Mike Allen , and Roy Schwartz (How to communicate succinctly in a digital world where attention spans continue to decrease)
  3. The First Minute - Chris Fenning (Make workplace conversations effective from the first second)

Phase 3: Having a bias towards massive execution

  1. Building a Second Brain - Tiago Forte (A systematic way to organize information to accelerate your execution)
  2. The 10X Rule - Grant Cardone (The mindset you didn’t know you needed to achieve massive success)

If you're expecting a call to action, you're right: enjoy the reads!
