Books about fonts for children
Sarah Hyndman
Designer/researcher, author, speaker | New book: Seeing Senses | Interactive talks & masterclasses with live experiments | How to create multi-sensory experiences that resonate, not clash.
As a sideline, I’ve been writing books about fonts for children. I’ve found that many of the children I talk to love lettering and expressive typefaces, so I decided to start writing books for them. The long-term plan is to work with a publisher. However, I decided it would be great to self-publish them as colouring books that children can play with while they’re in lockdown. Each book is freshly printed by Amazon’s print on demand service and available in most countries around the world. Buy the books here.
Fontosaur: When dinosaur fonts roamed the Earth
A colouring book written and illustrated by Sarah Hyndman
This is the first in a new series of books that combine dinosaurs with fonts. It began when Sarah’s 12-year-old nephew Eddie had the brilliant idea to make the faces of animals like cat, dog, cow, pig and T-Rex out of the letters of their name. Sarah and Eddie are now working on a collaborative sequel together. Read more about this new book.
What do the fonts in your books get up to when you go to sleep at night and nobody’s looking? The Night the Fonts… is a series of books designed for you to read with your children. These are books that immerse children and adults in the fantastical world of fonts, helping children to recognise letterforms in different shapes and sizes while they learn to read. These books will also give your children a head-start as potential future graphic designers because they introduce them to typography, a foundation of visual communication, in a fun and interactive way.
