Booking more copywriting clients

The boring lead gen tasks that secretly work the best

I had a coaching call yesterday with the Confident Copywriting crew, and the hot topic was lead generation.

We’re coming up on our New Client Challenge in November, and a common question members are asking is:

“Will all the lead gen work I’m doing paying off or am I shouting into the void?”

The truth is that the work to get copywriting clients isn’t sexy. Sorry. The reliable-but-unexciting work builds relationships over time and pays off when you’re not even looking.

And you might think no one’s paying attention, but—surprise! They actually are.

On that call, a Confident Copywriter raised the concern that her social posts were just floating off into the ether. She was getting clients but they didn’t seem to be connected to her social media efforts. She started wondering if it was even worth the time she was spending.

After a little digging into where her clients came from, we discovered people were watching. They noticed and read her posts and were sharing her name quietly behind the scenes.

I know that “quietly behind the scenes” isn’t quite the dopamine rush of 20 new comments or a flood of likes. But it is how you bring in clients.

A post here, a comment and DM there, and over time you’ve got a steady stream of leads that know who you are and how you help.

Here are a few simple moves that help with lead generation, even if they feel small at first:

  • Just show up: Consistency is key. Post once or twice a week, not just for the clicks but to keep people seeing your name pop up. Maybe it’s a LinkedIn post, maybe it’s sharing a story on Instagram, maybe it’s a blog post—whatever it is, keep it regular.

  • Network without being weird: Forget the sales pitch; just interact. Like a post, drop a thoughtful comment, or even share someone else’s content. Networking is like compost—just spread it around without thinking too hard, and you’ll see the growth.

  • Prioritise connections: Do this before your to-do list crushes your soul. A quick “Hey, I really enjoyed your post” or “Loved what you shared about [insert thing here]” can go a long way in staying visible. (Not to mention, genuine connection is actually enjoyable. It’s a nice break from yelling, “Anyone need a copywriter?!” into the social media void.)

  • Share your POV: This is where your social posts, blog content, or newsletters come in. It doesn’t have to be groundbreaking—just let people know what you think. Think of each piece of content as a seed. Some seeds take longer to sprout, some hit sooner. But skip the planting? No growth, no clients.

So, if you’re feeling like lead gen is just a bunch of busywork, remember: your future clients are out there lurking. They might not like or comment, but they’re paying attention. And that means you’re doing it right.

Stick with it—trust that slow drip.

By the time you need clients, you’ll already have a pipeline in the works. Keep going!

Great advice, Belinda! Love this. Sometimes, I think we have our eyes too focused on the prize, and forget about the process of getting there!
