BOOKCLUBS IN LAGOS

BOOKCLUBS IN LAGOS

The statement "If you don't want a black man to find something put it in a book" was what stirred my love for reading. I am of the belief that in order to say you have taken from the pool of knowledge, you must first of all thirst for its waters. Reading is a passion for me as is writing, because I had to read to write and vice versa. 2018 and yet many of my fellow Nigerian youths have decided to embrace ignorance over the wealth of knowledge, what a wasteful choice. My love for reading however does not make me that student who graduates the university with a first class, far from it - I have come to understand over the years that school limits knowledge, schools are built to only register a portion of permitted knowledge into the persona of a learning child and would turn whoever follows its rules to the death into a fish trying to climb trees if you let it. I on the other rebellious hand takes in what my mind draws its interest to and I am not ashamed of the path I have decided to follow because of my love for the original sin (knowledge) that has only since I embraced, opened my eyes to the truth about humanity and society as a whole. Here is a poem I wrote to further illustrate my thoughts on the School System;

" YOU!

Broken sharpener

Recreating blunt pencils

To re-write which piece?

Daring Obscurantist!!!"

I was almost giving up hope in my generation of party goers, shepeteri dancers, legbegbe reciters, shaku shaku ambassadors and Brazilian hair zee-world models when I stumbled on a path to breathe new life into the future of the reading culture and a country with unbothered youths driving an already broken nation towards only greater harm, the idea of establishing Bookclubs, a way to read ourselves back into the truth, a way to seek redemption, a way out for a better world, a haven for readers coming together to exchange knowledge grasped from the fountain of words packaged in books written by thousands and thousands of writers ("seers" as I like to call them, for they see where man cannot, they connect us to the past, present and future).

Anyways without futher a-do, I will be listing Bookclub centers around the Lagos Metropolitan State, when I know of more Bookclubs around I will edit this article adding to the already listed Bookclubs below. When I can also, I will adjust the article to cover Bookclubs in Nigeria. HURRAY!!! Writers can keep writing for they have an audience that shall read of them, poets can keep searching for they will find the strength from their people from where they channel their creative muse and literature can keep existing, never dying, never withering away for literature is our society, it is all of us, literature and all its beautiful blessings found in its artistic genres.

All Bookclubs listed below can be found on Social Media or via their Bookclub listings on www.bookclubs.com.ng. Remember, listed below are Bookclubs that can be found only in Lagos. Here we go;
