That Book...A Lifetime of Love

??*??*?? Not only Valentine's Day, but every day – I think about how much some kind of LOVE has to do with the book projects of my clients:

?? The 70-ish guy who'd learned, through his often-painful memoir, to accept and appreciate himself

?? The corporate/govt client who'd created and implemented a program with significance for millions of people

?? The sprightly author who'd insisted on raising her two developmentally-challenged children at a time when she was told to 'put them away' (in an institution)

?? The immigrant/entrepreneur who came from a bloodshed-land of African civil wars, and longed to unite all the countries of her beloved continent

?? The hospitality-industry client who was proud to pay tribute, with a lush, keepsake book, to the 25th anniv. of his hotel chain...

?? And...yes, the heart-to-heart tale of a couple in love...I've helped do a few of those :)

These all were stories about love, pride in accomplishment, a certain longing and determination, and working hard to make something happen.

???? I believe that 'L' word, love, is so important. Not just infatuation, attraction, adoration, passion...but a deep abiding love that will take you through the often- extreme ups and downs of writing.

It's an incredible feeling, that kind of emotion. To be so inspired, so committed, and able to come back to it over and over, to make it grow and come alive in the best way possible.

But there will come a time, most likely, when you're sick of doing that book, have lost patience with it, find the road a rocky one, despair how to make it 'work'...yet continue to be attached to it, still loving it like the wayward, acting-up child creation it is.

???? And, just as with a child, you may find your attitude towards and care/cultivation of your book, changes with time. You come up with different solutions and resolutions. There may be some great advice you take...but other times you might wing it and be creative in what you do with this property.

After all, this precious thing you've created may be with you for several decades. You're in it for life! And you may come upon all sorts of ways to keep it alive, meaningful and relevant. That's love. True love.

The book you make may be passed on to new generations, and it may be in evidence long enough to become a kind of time capsule. And this creation of yours may have an impact on many people in the future. Wouldn't you love that?
