A book we discussed in June 2024
I reached out to Newton requesting book recommendations on matters women and leadership. He gave a good list. The Art of War for Women by Chin-ning Chu, caught my attention. On my next book browse at Text book Centre, guess what I bought? I finished reading it in four weeks. If you know me, you know that I'm usually consuming about three books at any given time. The "how", we can cover that another day. I circled back to Newton with a couple of catchy phrases and we decided to host a couple of ladies for virtual meet up and discussion in June. A well spent ninety minutes!
"I have to get myself a physical copy, Bella!" more than two ladies had said to me after the session. Again, if you know me, you know I'm big on feedback. Okaaaayyyy! Let's jump in!!!
Ladies, you need to transform your disadvantages to advantages? Women can and should embrace their (our) unique talents to level the corporate playing field. In the book are strategies to be examined, actions that celebrate our femininity to the fullest while gaining the freedom to soar to personal and professional heights. Do we want to navigate success, failure and the cards life has dealt you? Do you need an eye-opening holistic approach to winning?
The Art of War by Sun Tzu draws from Taoist philosophy which is based on observing rules that exist in nature. the five elements of strategy covered in the book are: Tao (moral standing or ethics), Tien (Timing), Di (Terrain or resources), Jian (Leadership) and Fa (Managing).
I'll ask a couple of questions, answers to which can be found by reading the book and applying self reflection:
At work, what short term gains have we put ahead of doing what's right? Is there a decision you are making that's driven by ego? Powerful questions to ask oneself: Am I driven by greed? Am I desperate? Who will be served? Who will be hurt? A point of reflection: What are the unique qualities that you possess?
How do you use your experience, knowledge and skills to soar high in your sphere of influence? Instead of waiting for someone else to blaze a new trail or to find a new way of doing things, do it yourself!
Turn those liabilities into assets! What? Your perceived lack of adequate education, presentation skills, connections... the list can be long... but you can turn it around!! You can orchestrate things to work out better for you!
Embrace empathy, understanding and trust-building in leadership, even as you provide direction and articulating the vision. I hope this statement lights a spark in you; Call out your greatness!! Before you can effectively manage people, you must manage the relationship between your work and personal life.

I'll jump to the essentials for victory. In my own words:
Interesting concepts that put the book on my must-reference-list: Win before you fight. The glass ceiling is an illusion. Use timing to generate momentum. Re-package your womanhood.
The book is loaded with tips on dealing sexual harassment, principles of management and navigating varied office terrains. Go get it!!
Thank you Newton Siele Let's do another one, very soon!
