Book - Subtract - Leidy Koltz

Leidy Klotz's book "Subtract: The Untapped Science of Less" proposes that we tend to overlook the benefits of subtraction instead of focusing on adding solutions and information. Klotz argues that the key to progress often lies in removing unnecessary elements. Klotz explores this underutilised approach through a mixture of behavioural science, design thinking, and historical examples.

Subtraction is not just a mathematical operation but also a philosophical approach to life. It challenges the belief that more is always better and helps us make conscious decisions about what we allow into our lives – physically and mentally. By embracing subtraction, we can simplify our lives, focus on what truly matters, and ultimately find a more fulfilling way of being.

Our Neglect of Subtraction:

  • We add tasks to already overflowing to-do lists instead of removing unnecessary ones.
  • We create incentives for good behaviour but rarely focus on removing obstacles that hinder it.
  • We collect new ideas while clinging to outdated ones, resulting in clutter and inefficiency.

Why Do We Overlook It?

  • Our brains are naturally biased towards addition, finding it easier to add than subtract.
  • Cultural and economic narratives prioritise growth and accumulation, making subtraction seem like a failure.
  • Fear of loss and a desire for safety create a resistance to removing anything, even when it's unproductive.

The Power of Subtraction:

  • It simplifies and streamlines, reducing complexity and noise.
  • It creates focus and clarity, allowing us to prioritise what truly matters.
  • It fosters innovation and creativity by pushing us to find new solutions with less.
  • It promotes sustainability and well-being by reducing our environmental and mental footprint.

Examples of Subtraction in Action:

  • Redesigning cities with walkable spaces over car-centric infrastructure.
  • Crafting minimalist art that conveys powerful emotions with fewer elements.
  • Implementing "detox diets" to cleanse the body and mind.
  • Saying "no" to commitments frees up time and energy for what truly matters.

Applying Subtraction in Your Life:

  • Start small: declutter your workspace, unsubscribe from unused services, and delegate tasks.
  • Embrace "stop-doing" alongside "to-do" lists.
  • Question the status quo and ask, "What can we remove?" before adding more.
  • Prioritise quality over quantity in all aspects of life.

Interesting story

In 1847, a curious teenager named Hanson Gregory changed the fate of the humble doughnut. He was frustrated by the soggy centres of his mom's fried cakes and decided to punch holes in the dough before frying, which gave birth to the iconic doughnut shape we know today. This seemingly simple act revolutionized the treat, allowing even cooking and more surface area for delicious toppings. The world fell in love with doughnuts, declaring them the "food hit of the century" at the 1934 World's Fair. This even sparked the creation of a doughnut chain with the optimistic motto: "Keep your eye upon the doughnut, and not upon the hole." Hanson's small act of removal turned into a delicious symbol of progress, proving that sometimes, less is truly more.

Whether it's Nike Air Max or balance bikes for kids, the story is similar: the act of subtraction adds more to the end product.

Great advice to clean the slate this time of year. I like to take my time and use the whole month of January to do some subtraction before I add any new resolutions to my plate. Thanks for sharing Amit!
