Book Series: Prisoners of Geography

This entry from?My Book Series?goes to "ten maps that tell you everything you need to know about global politics".

How I Found it

A special thanks to?Anup Jadhav once again! Ever since that lovely dinner we had, I have been thoroughly recommending this gem.

The subject of this book is rather interesting - international politics is about geography. Covering highly relevant areas such as; Why the interest of Russia in Crimea? Why does China's power base continue to expand? Why does geography matter in politics?

What it Tells me

We have obsessed for decades on its components, on the details. As a result, all too often, we focus on minute details, and miss the whole picture as a result.

For an effective diagnosis of the conditions and symptoms, we should look at multiple variables beyond what we are presented in mass media news. We should think about how different systems communicate with each other. {see previous entry Thinking in Systems}

How some of the international major concerns that are unfortunately still unresolved over decades, are in fact outcomes of decisions made without accounting for repercussions pinned to local geography, organisation and culture.

A very interesting overview of global geopolitics and the geography that informs it; an easy to read and insightful narrative that will give you HD glasses to understand a new layer of global news.

Food for Thought

We can correlate much of its contents to our own organisations, look at:

  • History. The whole series of past events, particularly in relation to the human affairs lens.
  • Geopolitics. Relations are influenced by geographical factors, so look at your locations and spaces, including digital ones and how the system is designed and performed.?
  • Culture. Look at the actual rather than the desired: ideas, customs, social behaviour, inclusion and bureaucracy.
  • Economy. That being the structure, budget allocations and what’s justified in terms of profitability.
  • Observation. Asking questions and monitoring can certainly help with diagnosis. Remember the holistic view of operations and finding your constraints. Do not forget the local circumstances and context which are highly important.

“Sometimes you will hear leaders say, “I’m the only person who can hold this nation together.” If that’s true then that leader has truly failed to build their nation.” Prisoners of Geography by @Itwitius 10 Maps That Tell You Everything You Need to Know About Global Politics

Tim Marshall's books are easy reading and extremely informative, some politicians and so called intelligence analysts should start here frankly. Couldn't recommend them enough. Wish he had been my history teacher at school, would have made my life a lot easier lol.
