As a career and executive coach with years of experience in both K-12 education and private practice at Careers by Design, I recently had the opportunity to listen to JP Michel’s thought-provoking book The World Needs You during my daily commutes. What really stood out to me wasn’t just the content, but how seamlessly JP’s ideas aligned with and deepened my own views on career development.
At the heart of JP’s book is a simple yet powerful idea: Instead of asking young people, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" We should ask, "What challenges do you want to solve?" This shift from focusing on job titles to focusing on challenges isn’t just a small change in wording—it's a complete game-changer.
JP does a fantastic job explaining why traditional career development approaches are no longer in sync with today’s rapidly changing job market. With artificial intelligence transforming industries and new career paths emerging every day, the idea of sticking to a single, lifelong career path is becoming increasingly outdated. JP proposes the “Challenge Mindset,” which offers a much more dynamic, flexible, and empowering way forward.
What I particularly appreciated about this book is its practicality. As someone who works closely with students and people transitioning careers, I found myself constantly thinking about how I could use JP’s ideas in my own work. His approach helps people connect their deeper motivations with real-world problems, making the journey toward a meaningful and sustainable career feel more possible and exciting.
The book is divided into three key sections, each moving from theory to practical steps. JP doesn’t just explain why we need a new approach—he gives us concrete tools to implement it. One of these tools is the “Challenge Profile,” which helps individuals align their skills, experiences, and aspirations with the challenges they’re passionate about solving. This is more than just a career roadmap; it’s a way to create a truly fulfilling career.
JP also introduces two incredibly helpful guides: the Challenge Interview Guide and the Challenge Exploration Guide. The first helps students approach professionals not just to learn about jobs, but to understand how people contribute to solving important problems. The second connects students to organizations and resources tackling global issues like sustainability and AI governance. These tools make the book's ideas actionable, helping readers apply the Challenge Mindset to their own career journeys.
What really hit home for me, though, was JP’s reimagining of the role of career professionals. We’re not gatekeepers or job matchmakers—we’re facilitators, helping individuals discover their “why” through the lens of the challenges they want to tackle. This shift in perspective is empowering not only for those we work with but also for us as career professionals.
