Unmasking AI
Last week, Dr. Joy Buolamwini (aka Dr. Joy) and her team at the Algorithmic Justice League (AJL) hosted a celebration for the new release of the paperback version of Unmasking AI. I was moved by the joy and positivity within AJL’s messaging for a vital and serious subject.
Unmasking AI is now available in paperback with a wonderful endorsement by Brene Brown: “Unmasking AI?is an urgent call that changed me in ways I did not expect.”
From my perspective, Dr. Joy’s origin story is as enlightening as her sharing about how she discovered AI bias. Dr. Joy’s journey illustrates how one event can change your life’s direction and purpose. Her discovery of #bias in AI will forever change how we view AI risks and shortcomings as we learn, grow, and travel down the AI innovation road.
Dr. Joy states that she is the daughter of art and science, emboldened by her parents to explore and ask questions, and to view the artist’s and scientist’s search for truth as common companions. If “Herstory” can embolden other girls and women, there is hope in STEM, Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning. Her story has certainly moved me.
This book is filled with gems. It goes beyond pointing out the flaws in AI, inspiring those of us who want to see the head and heart connected in technology.
