A tour de force challenging our assumptions about intelligence, Richard Yonck's Brilliant book is one of my favourites on the topic of AI and the future of technology. In Future Minds: The Rise of Intelligence from the Big Bang to the End of the Universe, the author gives a sweeping view starting at the Big Bang 14 billion years ago, the current state of intelligence and humanity, and peers over the horizon into the future.
Our world is becoming increasingly intelligent as artificial intelligence (AI) and other technologies continue to advance. Everything from chatbots to brain-computer interface innovations and the potential for superintelligence later in this century is changing right before our eyes. Is this just a byproduct of progress, or is there something more to it? What if the existence of intelligence is predetermined by the laws of nature?
What causes the emergence of life, intelligence, and civilization? Throughout the next century, how will it evolve, impacting both technology and humanity? As a result of interviews with scientists and researchers at the forefront of AI, complex systems and a variety of other fields, Future Minds attempts to understand the origins of these developments and where they are headed.
Will we encounter other intelligent life as we venture further from our planet or will we come to the conclusion that we are doomed to exist on our own? It doesn't matter how we look at it, the existence of extraterrestrial intelligence is becoming a major source of concern for the global community.
The famous AI thinker and author, Ray Kurzweil, writing in the New York Times, called Yonck “a surefooted guide and not without a sense of humour.” This book is a must-read for technology enthusiasts and those thinking about the future of humanity. Kurzweil is right: Yonck writes with a sense of humour, avoiding what is often boring, academic, techno-speak in books about AI.?
