Book review: Bonjour ChatGPT??

I couldn't resist grabbing this book after finding myself nodding along with every word Louis de Diesbach said during his appearance on the podcast Les Portraits de l'IA. A young professional and tech ethicist with a razor-sharp intellect, a compassionate heart, and an unreserved tendency for sharing his opinions—everything I admire in up-and-coming thinkers. And to top it off, he is Belgian ????

However, as much as I hate to admit it (I'm literally internally wrestling with myself to even write these words), much like how some meetings could have been emails, this book could have easily been an article or just a lecture, really. Well, there, I said it. Please don't hate me.

Book Description in a Nutshell??

As the title suggests, the idea for this book began with the author's curiosity about why people greet and thank conversational agents, even though they know these agents are as inanimate as their coffee machines. This phenomenon raises an intriguing question: what is really at play here?

Louis de Diesbach then explores and deconstructs, step-by-step, the impact of AI on human-to-human interactions, our worldview, and the ethical considerations regarding the future of communication and technology.

The Hidden Snag??

Now here's the catch, at least for me. This book, due to its subtitle and its detailed description of anthropomorphism, is marketed as providing an anthropological analysis.

The table of contents is also rather unconventional, reflecting the book's conversational tone.

This made it difficult to discern from the chapter titles alone that the book is not focused on anthropology, which might disappoint readers like myself who were seeking to explore anthropological resources and the ontological debate around technological animism. Unfortunately, it doesn't deliver on that front.

Book summary on Fnac

But enough of the sourpuss criticism. Let's move on to what the book does well.

Key Takeaways ??

? Understanding GenAI and ChatGPT

Louis de Diesbach provides a comprehensive explanation of generative AI, focusing on ChatGPT. He breaks down how these technologies work, making complex concepts accessible to readers of all backgrounds.

? Anthropomorphism, the Uncanny Valley and the ELIZA Effect

The book explores the phenomenon of anthropomorphism and the ELIZA effect in detail, highlighting how and why people attribute human-like qualities to AI. These agents are intentionally designed to be relational objects, enhancing user engagement and interaction. This design can foster a deeper emotional connection, leading users to perceive AI as more than just a machine.

? Neoliberalism and New Technologies

de Diesbach explores how neoliberalism, combined with new technologies, is shaping a new vision of society. He discusses the ideological underpinnings of these changes and the implications for our social and economic structures.

? Ethical Considerations Regarding AI

The author underscores the urgent need for policies and regulations governing AI. He tackles ethical considerations advocating for responsible development and implementation of AI technologies.

Parting Thoughts??

If you haven't already, I highly recommend picking up a copy of Bonjour ChatGPT.

While I initially expected an anthropological deep-dive and was a bit disappointed (blame it on the publishing house!), the book still offers valuable insights. It's a must-read that will leave you more informed and engaged with the rapidly advancing world of conversational AI.

?Bonus point: you get to ask people around whether they say hello to ChatGPT and why. You might be surprised by their answers!
