Book Review: Awakened
I got to know about Mam Nonkululeko Gobodo in my teenage years. I saw an interview on CNBC. I was intrigued to know about the 1st black female Chartered Accountant in South Africa. Her story gave me hope that I can possibly be the 1st of or at something, it was possible. Fast forward to years later, I meet her at the 2023 Forbes Women Awards. What a humble woman she is, she is real!
?I learned she published a book about a year ago when she did an interview at GIBS Business School, the interview was published on YouTube. It took a while for me to buy the book, and to read it. When I did, I was blown away! She is a powerhouse.
Her story is precious, unique, real and I feel we can all resonate with it in one point of her life or the other. One thing I learned is there is always a sacrifice for every career move. This woman had a vision and never stopped until she achieved it. She is so resilient that she does not get shaken by challenges. She will do it, do it all if she must.
?She is such a learner, never to repeat mistakes she made, but always moving forward.
I love how she just went in and did something people never did. The entrepreneur in me was inspired to build, and be better. A people’s person, who asks for help, is not afraid to share her dreams and goals.
“I learned that your vision may face challenges, but you should not allow the noise to distract you from achieving it, you should always remain focused.” I quote.
?
If you need a mentor, this book is a tool equivalent to a mentor. That is what I used in 2023. It gave me answers to most of my questions and how to pave ahead.
?Mam Nonkululeko was not afraid to lose people, nor to fail. She used that to pivot and to grow. I am still amazed at her chutzpah.

Of course, there are context on the above quotes. The book is available in book shops or follow her page for her public speaking sessions. I have watched almost all of them on YouTube. She speaks wisdom worth listening to.

1 年I know exactly how that feels like, it is okay. Please do get the book, I guarantee you, it will change your perspective. It helped me grow and be okay with being slow, and trying to figure things out. I feel you. If it helps, I graduated at university 10 years after I finished high school. My peers had really progressed by then.

1 年It sounds like a book one must read. Thank you for the review. The quote speaks deep to me as a young person trying to figure things out about myself. At times one feels like they have failed because they are still struggling to find their feet in this world especially when your peers seem to have figured out the route they want to take. I am probably rambling but this just shows how deep this quote hit me, so thank you.
