Book Review 28/200 - 5/5 - 'Twas the Nightshift Before Christmas', Adam Kay - Non-Fiction - Medical Diary/Documentary

I was given this book 2 days ago from a fellow traveller in Italy (who ironically is also a doctor), and, because it's the festive time, thought it appropriate to share it as part of my mass upload of this years reviews (sorry in advance ??)

Adam Kay brings us his most memorable, darkly funny and certainly most somber and haunting moments during his time as a Doctor in Emergency at Christmas time.

Christmas has recently passed us by, however millions of dedicated staff headed off and will do so as we ring in the new year.

This is the absolute perfect present for anyone who has experienced a trip to the hospital, perhaps aggravated by the long triage wait yet completely obvious to the chaos ensuing on the other side of those doors. Kay delves into his diaries once more for a hilarious and sometimes heart-wrenching view behind the blue curtain at this festive time.

I often think about mortality and legacy and one particular story of Kay's hit home hard when one of his patients who was very ill with not a lot of time asked, "Am I going to die?" Kay's answer and memory of that day still follow him and laid bare on the page for us all to learn from.

Twas the Nightshift Before Christmas is the perfect tribute and gift for any one who is there on the frontline removing baubles from the various places they are lodged at this, the most glorious time of the year.
